A Comment by Pope of Dacier

[edit]

I'm reading Pope's The Odyssey of Homer, and in a footnote he states, "O woman, silence is the ornament of they sex. Madam Dacier, though she plunders almost every thing, has spared this observation."

Although this article says Pope found her useful, it seems likely that he disliked her for whatever reason, based on his own statement above. Though, he could still have found her useful regardless of whether he liked her or not. I'm not sure if this additional color is helpful or not to understanding the topic. It also isn't quite of the quality to be listed under the "Controversy" section — I think — though it is interesting.
