She is one of only 3 women sculptors credited with creating 3 monuments in the US.
I do not understand what this means. I can name any number of women sculptors (well many more than three) who have more than three monuments in the US. What am I missing? Einar akaCarptrash (talk) 00:11, 31 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
While I can't claim to know much about the issue, perhaps its resolution turns on "public monuments" - that is, not so much monuments that are just accessible to or for the public, but monuments that have been formally commissioned by a city or state for an official monument, if you know what I mean. Monuments serving an official government function or purpose. Gregory's best known monument may be the Bienville Monument in the French Quarter of New Oreleans http://www.flickr.com/photos/wallyg/2488706814/ Erected 1955 by Louisiana Purchase Sesquicentennial Commission. The statement could be made clearer, to be sure. Bdushaw (talk) 23:28, 3 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Here is the message I sent to the editor that I think put that sentence back,
Not to long ago I removed this sentence ( At the time of her death, she was one of only three women sculptors in the U.S. credited with three public monuments.) from the Angela Gregory article. I am not doing it to diminish her her or her work, I am a big fan, but removed it because it is clearly (on of 27 words or phrases that mean "in my opinion") a false claim. Just because it is footnoted does not make it true, nor does it mean that it belongs in the article. It came from her obituary, a source of information that is notoriously give to hyperbole. I have found that claim in other places and it is just as untrue there. However I do not care about those places. I do care about wikipedia. I am not inclined to get into an editing war over this, I'd rather convince you that it does not belong in the article.
Women with three public monuments in the USA, all prior to Gregory's death in 1990..
1. Anna Hyatt Huntington the wikipedia article on her lists something like a dozen equestrian monuments. She has others too.
2. Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson the wikipedia article on Kitson mentions 50 versions of her Hiker statue alone. She has more other stuff.
Sorry, Bdushaw, I did not really respond to your points. To me it does not really matter what the writer of Gregory's obit meant by "public monument." All we have is how the statement would read to the average wikipedia user. Or edit, for that matter. Also I strongly suspect that if you look at the commissions done by these other women sculptors you would find just as many "public monuments" by them, no matter how we define the term. I feel that the sentence has to go. Carptrash (talk) 00:36, 4 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
My sense is that it ought to be replaced with something better - Gregory was known for her public monuments and she was unusual as a woman in doing these sorts of things for the time. I think those were the sentiments the sentence is trying to convey. I have faith that OceanNancy (who I know and who has asked me for guidance with Wikipedia) will recognize the problem and find a resolution. Even just "...one of the few women commissioned to create public monuments..." or something like that might work. Its always a bad idea to cite specific numbers like "3" since it immediately causes people to start thinking of exceptions. Bdushaw (talk) 01:01, 4 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hi Carptrash--Your point is well taken and I have always felt that that claim re' three public monuments was a bit squishy. It shows up a lot of places, however: this website, where it is stated as follows: "A distinguished artist, Miss Gregory is one of only three women sculptors in the United States credited with three public monuments." See the edits I have just made to the first paragraph and also see the sentence I added at the end of the paragraph that mentions the Henry Watkins Allen monument.I'm delighted to know you are a fan of Angela's. She was a good friend of mine, although she was more than twice my age.OceanNancy (talk) 04:58, 4 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Your most recent edits look (and read) just fine. As far as that 3 monuments thing goes, I am a firm believer that repeating a falsehood many, many, many times still does not make it true. I would be very interested in some, any of your insights into Gregory and her work. I am currently (and for many years before) been working on this project, http://www.archsculptbooks.com/home.htm and am particularly looking for information and pictures of her architectural work. In any case I think that the article does a great job of preseting her as not just a fine artist but also as an interesting person. We can continue this conversation, if you wish, on one of our talk pages or in email.

As a new editor, I noticed Gregory doesn't have an image yet but I'm not familiar with the rules for uploading images (copyright, etc.). Would anyone be willing to work on this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ckearney07 (talk • contribs) 17:32, 26 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
