geography or history

This seems more about history than geography. Also is sounds like a political statement against the Brazilian government policy in the region, and in my opinion should be deleted. 212.201.75.4 16:41, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

In the Amazon rain forest, the name "Olivia" is quite common. I am afraid that the text contains more errors. The author is, I suspect unaware of new archeological findings and discussion about whether or not the different tribes had their own writingsystem. Inca's where not the only kingdom (scientific debate) who thrived here. It seems to me he/she is hanging on to popular believes. In this case I would suggest to stick to general information and leave the serious parts up to the people who'd know.--Glynn71 11:51, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Capitalization

I believe that this article (Amazon Basin) is miscapitalized. The standard spelling appears to be Amazon basin (i.e. basin should be lowercase). See Britannica, Smithsonian Institute, Smithsonian.com, Foreign Affairs, The Economist. I will boldly move it. Pburka (talk) 21:40, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

Geological development should be described.

The section on geography states that "The Amazon basin formerly flowed west to Pacific Ocean until the Andes formed". This poorly supported factoid is a monumental understatement of how the basin developed, which is as yet poorly understood. And that development is considered key to explaining the regions amazing ecological diversity, which itself is not mentioned in the article (except for birds). If anyone is up to working on this I would recommend an article in a recent issue (30 Oct.) of Science, "Cradle of Life", that provides a good overview of current status. ~ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 00:54, 11 November 2015 (UTC)

indigenous peoples?!

why does one find here a list of animals living in the amazon basin, but not a list of indiginous human inhabitants, tribes & cultures, past and present, including their traditional life styles, how some try to preserve it (uncontacted ones?!), and how it is generally subverted and lost (replaced by the lure of a better life [?] or forced...)?? why just a few languages? one can hope that this lack was not an intentional suppression...

I have added a caption on the topic and a link... a description of typical traditional "life styles" and of the struggle of indigenous peoples - including the ecological aspect - should follow. HilmarHansWerner (talk) 02:35, 12 January 2020 (UTC)

global ecological role and global climate function?!

no word on the global ecological role and global climate function of the amazon forest??! ok, some people consider the amazon forest just as a national property free to be locally exploited for just the needs of the 'nation'. but this is meant to be a scientific encyclopedia, not a politically streamlined journal...

Source/Size of Amazon Basin

This article says:

"The Amazon drainage basin covers an area of about 6,300,000 km2 (2,400,000 sq mi)"

But does not give a source; the Wikipedia article on the Amazon rainforest gives different figures for the Amazon basin:

"This basin encompasses 7,000,000 km2 (2,700,000 sq mi)" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_rainforest

Neither page gives a source, but the online Encyclopedia Britannica backs up the Rainforest article's figures:

"The vast Amazon basin (Amazonia), the largest lowland in Latin America, has an area of about 2.7 million square miles (7 million square km)..." https://www.britannica.com/place/Amazon-River

I haven't edited anything on Wikipedia for a while, but if I can figure out how to add the Enc Brit as a source, I'll make that change and do so. If anyone else wants to go ahead, please do so. Ergonaut2001 (talk) 02:35, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

Fishing.

I just added a fishing section to this article, there was a paragraph in the fish section that covered fishing, I moved this to the fishing section. Over the next several weeks I will be adding more information regarding fishing in the amazon basin.
