Any credible references?
[edit]Any credible references to the claim that "the Alphonso Mango is named after Afonso de Albuquerque?" According to Wikipedia, mango "is a fruit which is indigenous to the Indian subcontinent." I wonder where a Portuguese obtained the cultivar of Afonso and brought it to India. Ctchou (talk) 01:18, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Effects of chemicals section?
[edit]This section is clearly self-promotion and partisan, using Wikipedia as a "soapbox" (i.e., against Wikipedia policy) and with little-to-no relevance to the mangoes specifically. The whole section is also a word-for-word copy (inaccurate grammar and all) of a blog it links to — a blog on shreemango.com written under the banner "Shree Mango". The section added to Wikipedia was by a user known as "Shreemangoes." Hmmm.
First, the blog is not an independent and credible source in itself. And, even as a layman, none of the techniques listed seem in any way particular to Alphonso mangoes – they could be the same for any crop. It doesn't seem to have any particular relevance.
I'd strongly suggest its place is only on that blog, and not on Wikipedia. I notice that someone has tried to delete/edit it twice, and "Shreemangoes" keeps reinserting it, despite being told one of those times that it was cut for being promotional/soapbox and against Wikipedia policy. Garcia d'Orta
[edit]I have had a check of the English translation by Clements Markham and there is no evidence for this statement "In 1563, Garcia da Orta wrote of Alphonsos grown in Portuguese Bombay, which were to be presented to the governor (viceroy) in Goa." Even the text in Vikram Doctor (10 June 2017). "How India's mango diplomacy has been winning friends and foes over the years". The Economic Times. Retrieved 4 January 2023. does not say so.
