1981 Drake

I read somewhere that Drake University was to play in the 1981 bowl game before it was canceled but can't verify this, can anyone verify this?--SportsMaster (talk) 16:12, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

I looked around, and the only thing I can find anywhere is on Drake football Wikipedia articles or mirrors of those elsewhere online. The citation on Drake Bulldogs football links to the main page of the Drake football website. A search of the Drake website (godrakebulldogs.com and drake.edu) yields nothing. The Drake media guide has a page of interesting facts, "Drake Football A to Z", but doesn't mention the Aloha Bowl. I couldn't find anything in Google News Archive, Google Books, or Newsbank. I also tried searching news for where Hawaii (allegedly Drake's scheduled opponent for the game, according to the wikipedia article) might have been headed at the end of that season, but nothing.

It seems very unusual that two teams would be slated for a bowl game that hadn't even been approved by the NCAA that late in the season, unless something fell through at the last minute. In 1982, the bowl games, including the inaugural Aloha Bowl, were certified in April. This was the case in 1981 as well. In fact in April 1981, the NCAA certified a game called the Pineapple Bowl for Christmas Day 1982 at Aloha Stadium (and 1982 isn't a typo, here's another source... appears to have become the Aloha Bowl by the following April), but nothing in 1981. It seems like such an odd and specific thing to add to an article, but I'm thinking the Drake-Hawaii bowl game is bogus. Strikehold (talk) 17:38, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
