Deal was born on December 16, 1877 in Hampstead, Maryland, a town north of Baltimore approaching the Pennsylvania border. According to the 1880 census, her father, George Deal, was a farmer and her mother, Charlotte, “kept house.” Alice was the second of seven children -- three girls and four boys -- among whom were older sister Flora, and younger siblings John, Grace, Clay, George, and Oliver Deal. Census records up to 1890 list her family’s last name as Diehl, a German last name. Although many Americans have German ancestry, some German immigrants chose to Anglicize their last name to better assimilate into American society. This appears to be the case here as the family last name evolved from “Diehl” to “Deal.”

In the 1900 census, her occupation was listed as “teacher.”

When she applied for a passport, she listed her residence as The Victoria (likely on Clifton Street, NW, according to the 1910 census) and her occupation as high school principal. She stated that she would be traveling to Holland, France, England, and Scotland, departing on July 26, 1924. Ship manifest records indicate that she returned from Europe to Quebec on September 5, 1924 aboard the SS Regina.
