[edit]I have reason to believe that Cameron Algie of 1685 was not the first to go by this variation from Algeo. James Algie was executed in Paisley, Scotland in 1685 as a Calvinist Covenanter, so presumably the name had been in use at least a short lifetime before 1685. This is verified by a primary source article describing the event: digital.nls.uk/6/74412458.pdf.
This name was later altered once again to Elgee, which is worth noting in this article and includes famous figures such as the Young Irelander Jane Francesca Elgee and her son Oscar Wilde. Others bearing the Elgee surname include judge John Kingsbury Elgee, Jane F. Elgee's brother and Louisiana secessionist, and his son Adj. Gen. Charles Le Doux Elgee of the Confederacy.
