Biopic of Rachmaninoff

I remember many years ago reading a news story about a feature film that was announced as going into production. It was to be about the life of Rachmaninoff, and was to star Alexis Weissenberg as the composer. Weissenberg was chosen, not just because of his wonderful pianism which would obviate the need to have another pianist's hands interpolated in piano-playing scenes (such as in Song Without End, in which Jorge Bolet's hands appeared over Dirk Bogarde's acting), but also because of his facial resemblance to Rachmaninoff.

I am vague about when this announcement was made - some time between the mid 1970s and the mid 1980s is the best my memory can do. Such a film has never, to my knowledge, seen the light of day. Jack, I had never heard of this, but it sounds like a terrific idea. Alas, it seems that it eventually came to nothing. I made a search for it in the Imdb-Internet Movie Data Base but couldn't find anything about this film. A shame really, because I think Weissenberg would have made a very physically convincing Rachmaninoff (potential ham acting aside...). MUSIKVEREIN 16:40, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
