Aethalometer™
[edit]This is a trademarked name, so it shouldn't be treated like a normal word.
I propose "the aethalometer" be changed to "the Aethalometer" and "the aethalometers" to "the Aethalometer instruments". 2A02:8108:96BF:FC44:5A6B:AB92:87D6:9A33 (talk) 17:23, 19 January 2023 (UTC)
- Well spotted - and good to point this out. The rules are laid out here MOS:TMRULES. 45154james (talk) 15:00, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
- @CambridgeBayWeather You undid my change to capitalize Aethalometer. I still disagree with this. Please contribute to this Talk page and reconsider if Aethalometer should be capitalized.
- I have no association with the company or any desire to advertise. I dislike tradenames used as common nouns. I am unaware of a generic descriptive name that would suffice in place of Aethalometer. I consider "aethalometers" to be wrong. I agree with you that there are sources with it lowercase. I propose that more sources or more official sources have it capitalised as a tradename. This disagreement is why we need to reach a consensus and why I bothered to change it in the first place.
- I have checked the rules as linked above by @45154james. I think "Aethalometer instruments" should be used for the plural. When "aethalometer" appears in a dictionary as a common noun describing this instrument, then it could be lowercase. In the meantime, Wikipedia should reflect the tradename. In detail, the trademark does not specify any font size, capitals. In fact it is in all caps. Discuss.
- Finally, apologies – but I have no interest in finding the sources or making any more edits. I just hope my suggestion to capitalise the tradename is reconsidered by the community. And apologies for not following any established protocol as I am not a regular editor and am bound to make mistakes. OscarBrownbread (talk) 15:53, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- We need more input as there seems to be multiple sources using both A and a. CambridgeBayWeather (#1 deranged), Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 16:20, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- I agree with OscarBrownbread. It seems pretty clear cut to me. It is indisputably a live, registered trademark (per the USPTO trademark database, US registration Number: 2405685); MOS:TMRULES says: "Capitalize trademarks, like proper names". The fact that it might be done incorrectly (lowercase) elsewhere doesn't seem relevant? 45154james (talk) 20:28, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
