At least five such robberies at Orange County, Ca., firms in six months have authorities concerned about a new breed of bandit as bold as jewel thieves, yet interested only in the tiny chips that give computers their smarts. ... some authorities think the high-tech crime wave is bound to grow ... In a recent Orange County incident, four men in dark clothing and toting machine-guns, an assault rifle and a .45-calibre pistol struck Advanced Logic Research at 10:30 p.m. Sticking a gun to a guard's head, the masked intruders demanded entry to the computer firm just days after the firm was in the news for developing a new computer" (Staff writer 1989, F2).
