• Yeah, the September 1st edits moving away from redirecting the adjective to the noun academy should have just been reverted. I would think that random links to academic aren't really unambiguous, rather people intend one of these related meanings, so pointing this to either back to academy, or an explicit disambiguation page, makes sense. --Joy (talk) 10:17, 3 September 2025 (UTC)

• Comment, leaning support: I've heard it argued previously that "academic" used a noun in this way isn't a feature of American English, and the article also seems to be saying this. Merriam-Webster doesn't state that the sense of the word meaning "a member (such as a professor) of an institution of learning (such as a university)" is "chiefly British", though, which it would usually do in such cases. Nonetheless, if there's a perception that "an academic = a member of academic staff" is uncommon in one of the most prominent varieties of English, that might be reason enough to treat the adjective as the main sense of the word, in which case Academic shouldn't redirect to Academic staff as if the noun were the main sense of the word.
