What is "Absolute"?

Neither this article nor Signalling block system makes clear what it is that is absolute in this form of block signalling. If there is to be a sensible dividing line and minimal overlap between the two articles, it would be helpful to make this clear. --TedColes (talk) 08:50, 24 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Absolute block means that only one train is allowed into a block section at once, without exception. By contrast, permissive block allows a second train to enter an occupied section provided that certain circumstances are shown to exist. For example, two portiona of a train that started at different origins might be combined into one train for the next stage of the journey, and so the two portions would need to come together for coupling - this is done under permissive block working, but would be forbidden under absolute block. --Redrose64 🦌 (talk) 09:14, 26 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
