Merger of SNCF Class X 73900 and DBAG Class 641 into this article
[edit]- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
- The result of this discussion was to merge. There was also discussion about moving the resulting article; that can be handled separately. XtraJovial (talk • contribs) 21:16, 7 December 2025 (UTC)
Hello, about a month ago I posted merge templates on the two articles above in regards to this article, since I did not make a talk topic about it, they were removed. Upon a second look it appears that the case is significantly less trivial than my initial expectation, so I apologise for that.
My reasoning is as follows:
All of the trains in question were built by the same manufacturer during the same years as part of the same order as a single product. The differences between the classes are, in the case of the two SNCF classes, the presence of systems for operation into Germany,[a] and in the case of the DB class, ownership. Despite their different class designations, the trains do not posses significant-enough differences nor is the coverage of them sufficient to justify separate articles on English Wikipedia.[b] A single article will be able to provide a more comprehensive picture of this type of rail vehicle and properly clarify the differences between all three types. The status-quo already reflects a significant confusion between the purpose of each article, with the Class 641 listing SNCF as operating the class, both the French articles listing the German class as very similar or identical, and a complete absence of this train's operation in Luxembourg (where it received yet another designation, as CFL Class 2100).
Notes
- ↑ Some units of the X73500 are listed as being able to operate into Switzerland, and yet do not have a separate class designation.
- ↑ There are precedents for a differences in article structure of rail classes between different Wikipedias, refer the Swiss NPZ in comparison to its German counterpart for example.
Now as to whether they should all be consolidated into the article for class X73500 in particular, as the most numerous class, or into a new article name (like "A TER"), is up for discussion.

- You present a cogent article for a merger. Murgatroyd49 (talk) 19:20, 18 October 2025 (UTC)
- @MKH1020 Nobody has opposed in 7 days, you can perform this merge yourself now! See WP:M5 for how to do it. FaviFake (talk) 21:49, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
- Do you think it would be reasonable to rename the article at the same time, given that this was not discussed but I think it should be done? MKH1020 (talk) 01:25, 12 November 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, of course! FaviFake (talk) 05:28, 12 November 2025 (UTC)

- @MKH1020 this has been open for a while are you still interested in carrying out the merge? You can find instructions at wp:m5 ScrubbedFalcon (talk) 10:42, 23 January 2026 (UTC)
- I have performed the merge of SNCF Class X 73900 into this article, and will merge DBAG Class 641 tomorrow. After that I will try to clean up the article and then nominate it to be moved. GearsDatapack (talk) 23:33, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hello, sorry for contributing to the perennial problem of pending mergers. To be completely frank initially I was not able to reconcile the desired organisation of the resulting article in my mind before losing motivation and time. I was planning to come around to it eventually but now I don't need to! So thanks everyone.

- @MKH1020 Don't worry about it! I would still like your input once I've finished merging and reorganising if possible. Just so I know I haven't removed any key information! GearsDatapack (talk) 07:04, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- don't be sorry! you should always propose mergers even if you don't want to perform them :) FaviFake (talk) 10:28, 27 January 2026 (UTC)

SNCF Class X 73500 → A TER – As of the recent merger of SNCF Class X 73900 and DBAG Class 641 into this article, it is no longer solely about Class 73500s, but about several trains categorised as A TER. After the move, the article would need to be reordered to not mention any specific class in the lead, and discuss each of them in their own sections. Restructured page
[edit]Now that the page has been moved, I have restructured the article not to focus on any particular class. @MKH1020 I would be glad for you to review the current state of the article as you proposed the original merge and suggested renaming the article, and seem to be somewhat knowledgable on the subject. We definitely need more sources for the article, but hopefully the general structure is okay for the time being. {{GearsDatapack|talk|contribs}} 10:22, 7 February 2026 (UTC)
- I think I might merely be good at looking knowledgeable about the subject ; ) In fact one of the things which inhibited me is that I was not able to find good sources covering it as "A TER". As far as a merge goes the only thing I would mention is that it might make sense for the infoboxes to get consolidated. The resultant article itself now would probably need to be brushed and all, but that is out of the scope of a merge... MKH1020 (talk) 20:24, 7 February 2026 (UTC)
