Essays on genetic determinism?

[edit]

Does this book really contains stuff on genetic determinism? In some of Richard Dawkins related articles, there was the statement that the gene-centric view of evolution and selection is often confused with genetical determinism, and I was wondering if that could not be the case. I really don't know, as I've not read it yet, so it's more a call for attention of anyone who has. --Extremophile 16:37, 7 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, chapter 2.4, entitled "Genes Aren't Us" is about genetic determinism. It begins:

The bogey of genetic determinism needs to be laid to rest. The discovery of a so-called "gay gene" is as good an opportunity as we'll get to lay it.

Subtitles

[edit]

My library has two versions of this book. The one I've got here is subtitled 'reflections on hope, lies, science, and love', while the other is simply subtitled 'selected essays'. Was the latter only used for the American version? I have added the former as a subtitle in the article, though I haven't been able to find anything more about this on the web.
