ADAMTS13 → von Willebrand factor-cleaving protease – Changing to Uniprot name. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Molecular Biology/Style guide (gene and protein articles) for details. GraziePrego (talk) 04:14, 17 August 2025 (UTC) This is a contested technical request (permalink). GraziePrego (talk) 01:11, 18 August 2025 (UTC) — Relisting. - UniProt lists the recommended name of the human protein as A disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs 13. We could also quibble on whether this is a gene article (current title should stay) or a protein article (use UniProt). Skimming the content it is written as a protein article. ⇌ Synpath 16:49, 18 August 2025 (UTC)
- So it does! Apologies, not sure how I misread the Uniprot name. I guess this discussion is more about whether to move it to that name in that case. GraziePrego (talk) 04:06, 19 August 2025 (UTC)
- Move to ADAMTS-13. Maybe the somewhat frustrating compromise here is to use the shortform ADAMTS-13 rather than A disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs 13 to balance WP:CONCISE, WP:COMMONNAME and UniProt naming. It might be frustrating in that it is almost identical to the current title, but it technically refers to the protein rather than the gene.
- Skimming the references it looks like ADAMTS-13 is used often in the titles of sources, which is sensible. Google ngrams shows that the short forms are more commonly used in writing (the full name is too long for ngrams, so I shortened it which is problematic for all the other similarly named subtypes). Polling Google Scholar results gives me that ADAMTS13 has the most hits but that includes discussion of the gene, appending -gene to that search gives similar number of hits to searches for ADAMTS-13 (~16-17k). Searching "vWF cleaving protease" OR "von Willebrand factor cleaving protease" gives around half the results of the other searches (~8k). Searching the UniProt recommended name gives one hit for an exact search and too many nonspecific hits otherwise ⇌ Synpath 14:56, 19 August 2025 (UTC)
