plus one lap

Why do these reports consistently say "+1 lap" for lapped drivers? Where it’s given as +29.182, for example, that’s where a driver has taken an additional 29 seconds to reach the finish. That’s more time than the winner. "+1 lap" would seem to indicate a driver who has done one more lap than the winner, which is clearly nonsense. The correct indicator would be "-1 lap" : 78 minus 1 is 77.... I do know that wikipedia isn’t the only place where this occurs. 84.67.37.223 (talk) 10:48, 26 May 2025 (UTC)

The logic here is that +29.182 means that the driver was 29.182 seconds behind the first at the finish. So +1 lap means they were 1 lap behind the leader. SSSB (talk) 14:23, 26 May 2025 (UTC)

There are various sources where -1 lap is used, and it should be consistently picked up in other places. +29 is because they have taken 29 additional seconds to complete the race; -1 lap is where someone has done a lap fewer... 84.67.37.223 (talk) 14:19, 27 May 2025 (UTC)

Don't act as though your way is the only correct way. You are coming across as arrogant and self centred. As I explained, it explains how far behind they are, not how much longer it took. So in that sense +1 lap is completely correct. -1 lap is completely correct if you think about it the way you describe. Both are correct from different perspectives. Gosh, I really seem to have upset someone here, and I don't know quite why. Is there really a need for this judgmental response? I think I am within my rights to think of my approach as correct, and if someone were to say "I don't agree" I wouldn't really be able to challenge that.
