Connection to South Antrim by-election

This by-election is mentioned prominently in the article, but it's not clear what the actual connection between it and the attack was - were the RIRA upset with the likely result, or with the fact that the election was happening at all, or was it simply a matter of lining it up so it coincided with a time when there was special attention on Northern Irish politics?
