Christy O'Connor

[edit]

There's surprising difficulty in deciding whether Christy O'Connor Snr or Christy O'Connor Jnr played in this Open. "The Majors of Golf" has Sr. and the European Tour agrees (http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/players/playerid=140/record/index.html) as does http://golfmajorchampionships.com/players?player=2091 . However https://www.theopen.com/Heritage/PreviousOpens#!/1979/Royal%20Lytham%20&%20St%20Annes has Jr. as does https://www.irishgolfdesk.com/news-files/2012/7/15/encouraging-open-build-up-for-harrington.html . The Glasgow Herald gives him as plain "Christy O'Connor (Royal Dublin)". This is convincing evidence that it was actually Snr since Jnr is usually Shannon (eg in the Irish Open that year: https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=HstAAAAAIBAJ&sjid=D6YMAAAAIBAJ&pg=2226%2C5681860) Also Snr's last appearances in the Open (1976, 1977 and 1979) coincide with 3 wins in the PGA Seniors Championship, the winner of which received a direct entry to the Open: eg https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=8hA-AAAAIBAJ&sjid=5EkMAAAAIBAJ&pg=2182%2C1870390 "He can now play in the Open championship in two weeks time ..." So I'm convinced it was Snr and I've removed Jnr's T36 for 1979 (previously we had them both being T36). Nigej (talk) 16:38, 4 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
