100 qualifiers not 98

[edit]

It is clear from The Times and Glasgow Herald (for 2 July) that exactly 100 qualified. The Times for 3 July (but not the GH) have (after round 1) "No return: K Dalby (Finchley), Mr R Sweeny jun (R&A)" (Robert Sweeny Jr.) both of which are absent from https://www.theopen.com/Heritage/PreviousOpens#!/1947/Royal-Liverpool and (I think) the old Media Guide referenced here. The additional two are included in "The Majors of Golf: Complete Results of The Open, ..." Nigej (talk) 11:31, 30 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

40 made the cut not 39

[edit]

It is clear that 40 made the cut, including an amateur J. Rothwell. The Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail says "James Rothwell, of Pleasington (156). the only British amateur left in the championship was forced to scratch to-day because he could not get further leave from his job. He is a mechanic from Accrington." (noted also in the GH here: https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=RmhAAAAAIBAJ&sjid=j5QMAAAAIBAJ&pg=5371%2C3933411) I have removed the bit about Stranahan being the amateur to make the cut.
