WWII start

[edit]

Oh dear, edit wars ahoy ;-)

Most historians concede that WW2 started on September 1st 1939 with the German invasion of Poland. There is no doubt that existing conflicts came to be seen as part of this world war, but are not in themselves accepted as THE start of the war. This is a small but important difference. Otherwise I guess the Spanish Civil War could be considered the start of WW2, or even WW1! GRAHAMUK 07:19, 6 Aug 2003 (UTC)

You are 100% correct in your assertion. WWII started on September 1st. Incidents that occurred before are seen as the run-up to the War or a contributary factor, but the date the war is said to have started is with Hitler's invasion of Poland and nothing else. FearÉIREANN 19:24, 6 Aug 2003 (UTC)
It's a very Franco/Anglo-centric view of the war, and this is reflective in most of the prior Historical consensus. While I am sure the actual date will change in our collective history once the field moves away from Nationalized History and more towards the people that make up those Nations, (For instance, the first British, French, and American deaths in the fight against, and sometimes for, Fascism/Nationalism were in the Spanish Civil War, way back in 1936, but because the Governments of the future 'Allied Powers' lagged behind their own people in noticing the threat they are relegated to the footnotes of history.) a resource such as Wikipedia should follow the "official" historical consensus until its inevitable revision. It's hard to want to follow the British and French perspective of the war as definitive, when tens of thousands had already died and entire Nation-States had already fallen by the time of their belated entry. In my opinion 1936 makes more sense, as just a year later what is regarded as Asia's entry into the war would occur. Perhaps all that is required is a change in terminology in the future - already existing conflicts "merging" into a 'World War' in 1939? So much of our accepted historical norms come out of Nationalized propaganda and hyperbole, one day this will have to change, but not here, I suppose.-B  Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.33.77.131 (talk) 16:24, 4 November 2017‎ (UTC)Reply

Year in topic

[edit]

As per discussion at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Years the year in topic paragraph is scheduled to be deleted as it largely duplicates the links in the top box, and is not consistent with other year. Any objections should be made on that page please --BozMo|talk 19:34, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Condor Legion's arrival in Spain

[edit]

This page lists the date in May, which seems impossible given Guernica and Jaen(?) were bombed a month prior to this by the very same Condor Legion. Someone might want to look into it. I'm not a member of Wikipedia and as such I don't want to make such changes to the page, but I had thought it was in March that they arrived. - B  Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.33.77.131 (talk) 16:24, 4 November 2017‎ (UTC)Reply
