Army Naming Conventions

The Army's current naming convention is to list a unit as, for example the XX Medical [echelon] (Function).

So, for example, the 18th Medical Command, when it was originally activated as a Medical Command, was the 18th Medical Command (Communications Zone). When it moved to Hawaii, it most likely was reorganized as the 18th Medical Command (Deployment Support). Now it's the 18th Medical Command (Theater). But as far as the lineage and honors branch at the Center of Military History is concerned, those are all reorganizations, not redesignations. The only time it was REDESIGNATED, was when it was converted to from the 18th Medical Brigade to the 18th Medical Command, as reflected on its lineage and honors statement.

The Unit may have been referred to as the 18th Medical Command, 18th Medical Deployment Support Command, and now the 18th Theater Medical Support Command, but as far as the Army is concerned, it still is, and has always been, the 18th Medical Command.

Absent, of course, a redesignation (not reorganization) order that lists its title specifically as the 18th Theater Medical Command, (not 18th Medical Command (Theater), issued by USARPAC or HQDA, or a new lineage and honors statement showing the same thing.
