Snake Killer is a Danish crime drama television series created and written by Anders Ølholm. Consisting of four episodes, it was the first Danish-language scripted original commissioned by Prime Video, and was released in the Nordic countries in early 2026.[2][3] Pilou Asbæk stars as Brian "Smiley" Petersen, an officer in the Uropatruljen, a Copenhagen narcotics unit.[4][5]

Premise

[edit]

Set in Copenhagen, the series follows Brian "Smiley" Petersen and other officers of the Uropatruljen drug squad who go to war against a crime family after one of their informants is killed.[4][2]

Production

[edit]

The series is based on the Uropatruljen, a real narcotics patrol that Cineuropa described as "the most notorious police unit in Danish history".[2] Ølholm, previously a director of Shorta, researched the series by conducting several hundred hours of interviews with a former officer of the unit as well as with colleagues and informants.[5] He directed the first two episodes and Kaspar Munk the remaining two.[4]

It was produced by Nordisk Film Production and filmed in Copenhagen and the surrounding area.[2]

Asbæk said of his character that "he isn't meant to be a role model; he's meant to be a reflection of how" people rationalise their behaviour when institutions fail.[5]

Release

[edit]

Snake Killer was released on Prime Video in the Nordic countries, with international distribution handled by Nordisk Film Production.[2][5] It was selected for the Official Selection at the ninth edition of Canneseries in 2026.[4]

Reception

[edit]

Reviewing the series for the Swedish site Filmtopp, Thindra Rundström praised the ensemble, singling out Lars Ranthe, and found the cinematography accomplished, but criticised the series for tonal inconsistency, dialogue that shifted between authentic and didactic, and thin characterisation. Rundström compared it unfavourably with the Danish series Reservatet, writing that Snake Killer was like "a date with someone who has everything on paper" but where "the chemistry doesn't quite work".[6]
