Siratus lamyi is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Muricidae, the murex snails or rock snails.[1]
Description
[edit]The shell of Siratus lamyi reaches a maximum known length of 40.2 mm.[2] It is a medium-sized muricid with a fusiform shell, a moderately elevated spire, and well-developed axial varices bearing short spines. Spiral cords ornament the teleoconch and intersect the axial sculpture, producing a cancellate appearance typical of the genus Siratus. The aperture is ovate, and the siphonal canal is elongated and open.[2]
Distribution and habitat
[edit]Siratus lamyi is known from the continental shelf off French Guiana in the western Atlantic Ocean.[1][2] Like other members of the family Muricidae, it is a marine benthic species inhabiting soft-bottom substrates on the continental shelf.[3]
Taxonomy
[edit]The species was described in 2008 by Didier Merle and Bernard Garrigues from material collected off French Guiana.[2] It belongs to the genus Siratus, a group of predatory marine gastropods within the subfamily Muricinae of the family Muricidae.[1]
