Shawn Daniel is an American college football coach. He is the offensive line coach at South Dakota Mines, a position he has held since 2026.[1] Daniel previously served as the first head football coach at Simpson University in Redding, California, leading the Red Hawks from 2023 to 2025.[2][3]
Early life
[edit]Daniel is a native of Taft, California, where he attended Taft Union High School.[4][2] He then went on to play college football at Trinity Bible College in Ellendale, North Dakota, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in biblical studies in 2002.[2]
Coaching career
[edit]Daniel began his coaching career at his alma mater, Trinity Bible College, serving as an assistant coach during the 2001 season.[2] He then returned to California and spent five seasons, from 2002 to 2006, as an assistant coach at St. Joseph High School in Santa Maria, California.[2][4]
College assistant coaching
[edit]In 2007, Daniel joined Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) as offensive line coach, a position he held through the 2011 season.[2] While at SAGU, he completed a master's degree in theological studies in 2011.[2]
Daniel moved to Midland University in 2012, where he coached the offensive line through 2015.
In 2016, he became offensive coordinator at Lyon College, serving in that role for two seasons.[2] Daniel then joined Missouri Valley College as offensive coordinator in 2018 and remained with the Vikings through the 2021 season.
Simpson
[edit]On December 6, 2022, Simpson University announced the addition of football as a varsity sport.[5] Later that year, Daniel was hired as the first head football coach in program history.[3][4]
Daniel oversaw the construction of the new program and coached Simpson during its first two seasons of competition. The Red Hawks competed as an NAIA independent in 2024 before joining the Frontier Conference in 2025. Simpson finished 0–9 in 2024 and 0–10 in 2025, giving Daniel a 0–19 record as head coach.
On December 19, 2025, Daniel resigned as Simpson's head football coach.[6]
South Dakota Mines
[edit]On July 8, 2026, Daniel was named offensive line coach at South Dakota Mines under head coach Charlie Flohr.[1]
Personal life
[edit]While coaching at SAGU, Daniel graduated with a Master of Arts in theological studies in 2011.[2]
