Ruminococcus flavefaciens is a species of cellulolytic, strictly anaerobic bacterium in the genus Ruminococcus. It is associated with the rumen of cattle and other ruminants, where it contributes to the degradation of plant cell-wall material. R. flavefaciens is the type species of the genus Ruminococcus.[1]

Taxonomy

Ruminococcus flavefaciens was first described during work on cellulose-decomposing bacteria from the rumen of cattle.[2]

The specific epithet flavefaciens means "yellow-producing".[1]

Description

R. flavefaciens is generally described as a Gram-positive, anaerobic rumen bacterium. It is one of the major cultivated cellulolytic bacterial species of the rumen, along with Fibrobacter succinogenes and Ruminococcus albus.[3]
