Ronen Plot (Hebrew: רונן פלוט; born 1955) is an Israeli politician and civil servant. He has served as mayor of Nof HaGalil since June 2016, and was Director-General of the Knesset from 2013 to 2016. He has also served as director-general of the Israeli Ministry of Immigrant Absorption and of the Ministry of Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs. Since December 2020 he has held a senior position on the directorate of Yad Vashem, serving as its acting chairman during the transition between permanent chairmen.[1]
Early life and civil service career
[edit]Plot was born in 1955 in Bălți, then part of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic in the Soviet Union, and immigrated to Israel in 1974.
A member of the Israeli Labor Party, Plot was placed 46th on the party's list for the 1996 Israeli legislative election.[2] He was not elected.
Before entering national administration Plot held a series of local and industrial posts, including head of the industrial local council of Migdal Tefen and deputy mayor of Nazareth Illit, and served as secretary of the regional workers' council in the Galilee.[3] He subsequently served as director-general of the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption and then of the Ministry of Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs, both under minister Yuli Edelstein.[3]
In April 2013 the Knesset Finance Committee approved Plot's appointment as Director-General of the Knesset, succeeding Dan Landau.[3] In that role he was reported in December 2014 to have assured Knesset cafeteria staff that they would not be dismissed during the election recess, reversing a practice under which they had been let go each time the Knesset rose.[4]
Mayor of Nof HaGalil
[edit]An early municipal election was called in Nazareth Illit after the Supreme Court found moral turpitude in the offence for which the incumbent mayor, Shimon Gapso, had been convicted, barring him from returning to office.[5] In May 2016 Plot, who had previously served as deputy and acting mayor of the city, announced his candidacy and took leave from his position at the Knesset to campaign, saying he had chosen "a different kind of contest, one that carries a price in giving up status and conditions, but also holds an enormous challenge".[5]
Writing in Haaretz during the campaign, Hilo Glazer described a city in decline after three years of instability under Gapso, whose son entered the race in an attempt to block Plot, whom Glazer characterised as the Gapso family's nemesis.[6] Plot was elected on 7 June 2016.[6]
As mayor, Plot led the initiative to rename the city from Nazareth Illit (Upper Nazareth) to Nof HaGalil, meaning "Galilee View", in order to distinguish it from the neighbouring, predominantly Arab city of Nazareth. The change was approved by the governmental names committee in March 2019 and adopted later that year.[7] He was re-elected in the 2024 Israeli municipal elections.
Yad Vashem
[edit]In December 2020 the directorate of Yad Vashem appointed Plot as deputy chairman, a position from which he served as the institution's acting chairman following the retirement of Avner Shalev at the end of that year.[1] The appointment followed a public controversy over the selection of a permanent chairman.[1] Plot continued as deputy chairman after Dani Dayan was appointed to the permanent position in 2021.
