Robin Pemantle
Robin Pemantle (born June 12, 1963, in Walnut Creek, California)[1] is an American mathematician and mathematics educator whose work concerns probability theory and combinatorics. He is the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania. His research includes reinforced random processes, random walks and percolation, negative dependence, and analytic combinatorics in several variables. Pemantle was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2024.
Career
[edit]Pemantle joined the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1991 as an assistant professor of mathematics. He became an associate professor in 1994 and a full professor in 1998.[2] From 1999 to 2003, he was a professor at Ohio State University.[3] He joined the University of Pennsylvania in 2003 as the Merriam Term Professor of Mathematics and served as the mathematics department's undergraduate chair from 2011 to 2014.[4] In 2025, he was named the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Mathematics.[4]
His professional service has included editorial appointments with Transactions of the American Mathematical Society[5] and Memoirs of the American Mathematical Society from 2018 to 2024,[6] and with Transactions of Mathematics and Its Applications from 2019.[7]
He served on the American Mathematical Society's Fellows Selection Committee from 2021 to 2025, chairing it in 2022,[8] and joined the scientific advisory board of the Simons Foundation's Mathematics and Physical Sciences division in 2023.[9]
