Biography

[edit]

Lorca was born in Valparaíso on 16 November 1874, the son of José María Lorca Sánchez and Petronila Pellross Cabeza. He studied at the Liceo de Valparaíso and later attended the University of the State, now the University of Chile, while working at the Ministry of the Interior. He qualified as a lawyer on 23 June 1897 and left the ministry in 1899.

His legal practice focused mainly on mining and nitrate-related matters, and he also had business interests in Antofagasta and Taltal. Within the Liberal Democratic Party, he eventually served as party president.

Outside Congress, Lorca served as a municipal councillor in Santiago and as a presidential elector. In 1921, he founded the newspaper El Norte in Taltal. He later moved to Iquique, where he held several legal and administrative posts, including public notary, mining and commercial registrar, and judicial archivist between 1926 and 1929.

Lorca was also active in civic organizations. He served in fire brigades in Santiago and Iquique and was elected superintendent of the Iquique fire department in 1936. He was also a founding member and director of the Liga Marítima de Chile and published works on public administration and postal and telegraph legislation.
