Reorganization

Portal:Non-tropical storms

I've received a message from User:Juliancolton wondering if a new portal called Portal:Non-tropical storms can be launched. I would be in favor, however I think we should to do research and do new articles about older winter storms and perhaps new Winter storms of xxx year articles as well. @Fdmjiv: I've had a look at the coding of this part of the portal. It takes no notice of the current day-of-the-week, and displays weather news from today's date plus-or-minus three days. New article: Tropical cyclone season (All Areas)

I've had this cool idea for a long time and I've decided to share it with you. This is a new article about the tropical cyclone season going from 1990 to 2015 it includes the timeline and history of all the tropical cyclones in one year in pacific, indian, and atlantic oceans. Yes, yes i know, the topic is already covered (in separate articles) but I haven't seen anything about the indian ocean but this makes it easier to find all that in ONE article. Like my idea? The Fujita Scale

The Fujita scale is to mesuare wind speeds but the wind acuarulates to the damage. But if EF5 tonrdadoes does incredeble damage, well lets talk about ef6 and ef7. There like monsters so it will tear apart anything so there the most dangerous in the world. The question is, is the ef0-ef5 a pre-fujita scale? well i guess it is because...Every video on the tornadoes is just from ef0 to ef5. It just cunfusoses me because they dont put the ef6 an ef7 tornadoes.

There is a secret between supercells and tornadoes..The tornadoes look like spinning dust and clouds while supercells you wont want to be in. There like tornadoes that attend to get thicker and wider at the bottom..and there you have it.

• The EF scale doesn't actually have an upper limit (like the individual F-scales do) - so there is no such thing as a wind speed higher than EF-5 (which is anything greater than 200 mph). There actually is such a thing as a "theoretical F6 tornado", and the F-scale actually goes up until the speed of sound I believe. Guy1890 (talk) 06:25, 27 May 2017 (UTC)

The project was rebooted and completely overhauled on April 17th, 2018. Its goals are to revitalize the entire portal system, make building and maintaining portals easier, support the ongoing improvement of portals and the editors dedicated to this, and design the portals of the future.

As of May 2nd, 2018, membership is at 60 editors, and growing. You are welcome to join us.

There are design initiatives for revitalizing the portals system as a whole, and for improving each component of portals. So far, 2 new dynamic components have been developed: Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt.

Tools are provided for building and maintaining portals, including automated portals that update themselves in various ways.

To whom this may concern

this as probably already been recognised, but many (potentially the majority?) of weather-related article previews show the default hurricane map that shows up as the first image on (most? any?) page(s) included in the Weather Portal

not sure if this is a site-wide issue related to preview popups of pages included in portals, but for some reason I've noticed it very frequently among weather-related articles

also not sure that this is the right place to report what is probably a programming bug, but I don't know how to do that, so if anyone finds this if you could forward it to the relevant party please and thank you that'd be greaaaat, thaaaaanks mkay?

Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies → Cooperative Institute for Severe and High-Impact Weather Research and Operations

Renaming proposed: since the CIMMS has been absorbed into the new "Cooperative Institute for Severe and High-Impact Weather Research and Operations" on October 1, 2021, shouldn't the article name be changed accordingly? Link to Wikinews

In the section on recent and ongoing weather, there is a link to the Wikinews weather portal. As Wikinews is shutting down, I think it may be appropriate to remove this link and modify this section. I very strongly agree. Given the impending closure of Wikinews, any and all links should be removed/replaced. In fact, I think this should probably be applied to more than just WP:WEATHER. This could potentially merit a higher level discussion because the closure of Wikinews has sitewide implications, not just to the weather project. I have created a userspace draft for the layout to replace the current Wikinews content. Feel free to modify it to suit the needs of the project. I have an idea for a way to integrate the use of templates to allow content for this box to be drawn from that of other projects, I don't know how to explain it yet. I have made some changes to the userspace templates, I think that as there would be high interest in current and recent events, they should both be included but seperated, and certain events, such as tornadoes, should not be covered as a current weather event, as their very short lifespan would make it difficult to keep up with for editors. Before any changes are made, there will need to be a sub-template suitable for each type of system, and I don't think I will be able to create as

a)my limited experience with templates would limit my ability to achieve desired functionality, and

b)I am relatively new to Wikipedia and have relatively little engagement with the relevant Wikiprojects, so I would not have the best idea of what the desired functionality would be in the first place.

This looks really good. I went ahead and updated the current template since it contained many out-of-date links in addition to the defunct wikinews template, but if you could incorporate the "current storms" in your example into the current template (including current seasons like in the current version) that would be my preferred final state. I like having the seasonal links in addition to links for individual storms/events. But I invite others to chime in as well. RunningOnBrains^(talk) 15:07, 13 April 2026 (UTC)

Perhaps the section headings should link to the relevant weather phenomenon, but with the season links at the end of each section? I think this would be a bit more clear as if, for example, the heading for "Tropical cyclones" is left as is, the readers would expect the link to go to the article on that weather phenomenon, and if it had the title for the article for that year, "Tropical cyclones in 2026", readers might assume the list of storms given under that heading would include every occurrence of that phenomenon that season. This also avoids the situation where the heading may be a redlink, as that is relegated to being under the heading instead. Mitchsavl (talk) 04:39, 14 April 2026 (UTC)
