Peter Burchard (1921 – 2004) was an American author, free-lance designer, and illustrator. He primarily wrote children's books about slavery, abolitionism, and the American Civil War. He wrote 26 books and illustrated over 100.[1] His 1965 book One Gallant Rush was about Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts Regiment,[2] the first African-American unit in the Union Army. It was adapted for the 1989 film Glory, which won numerous awards.[1]

Burchard was born March 1, 1921, in Washington, D.C. to Russell Duncan and Ethel (née Brokaw) Burchard.[3] During World War II, he served on convoys in the North Atlantic. During this time, his drawings were published by Yank magazine.[1] After the war, Burchard graduated from the Philadelphia Museum School of Art in 1947.[3] He became a Guggenheim Fellow in 1966.[1]

Burchard was married three times. On March 23, 1945, he married his first wife, Elizabeth Chamberlain, with whom he had two children. He later married Lucy Edwards and Linda Wemyss Carman.[3]

Burchard died on July 3, 2004.[1]
