Perfect World (Chinese: 完美世界; pinyin: Wánměi Shìjiè) is a Chinese xuanhuan and xianxia web novel written by Chen Dong. It was serialized on Qidian beginning in August 2013 and concluded with its 2,014th chapter in 2016.[1][5] It is the second installment in Chen Dong's Shrouding the Heavens trilogy, following Shrouding the Heavens and preceding The Sacred Ruins.[6][7]

The story follows Shi Hao, a gifted boy who grows up in the Great Wilderness and Stone Village. After losing his original Supreme Bone, he begins a long cultivation journey that eventually expands from village and clan conflicts into struggles involving multiple realms, ancient powers and the origin of a great darkness.[8]

An animated television adaptation premiered on Tencent Video in April 2021. The series is produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures and animated by Fuxi Film.

Plot

[edit]

The novel begins with Shi Hao's childhood in Stone Village. Born with the Supreme Bone, he becomes the victim of a family conflict in which the bone is removed and transplanted into Shi Yi. Shi Hao survives and is raised in Stone Village, where his early life in the Great Wilderness becomes the foundation of his cultivation journey.

The Great Wilderness is populated by human settlements, powerful beasts, ancient bloodlines and supernatural beings. Shi Hao's encounters with the Willow God, ancient creatures and rival groups introduce the novel's cultivation system and establish the importance of inherited abilities, physical refinement and supernatural techniques.

As Shi Hao becomes stronger, he leaves the Great Wilderness and enters increasingly advanced cultivation environments. His journey brings him into contact with institutions, ancient inheritances and powerful cultivators, while conflicts gradually expand from personal rivalries to struggles involving entire realms.

The later narrative concerns the upper realms, the Nine Heavens and Ten Earths, the Sea of Boundaries and the historical origin of the darkness threatening the fictional universe. The final volume describes Shi Hao's efforts to protect the Heavenly Court and the Nine Heavens and Ten Earths before entering the Sea of Boundaries in search of the source of the darkness.

Setting

[edit]

The fictional world of Perfect World is structured around cultivation, supernatural techniques, ancient inheritances, clans, sects and multiple realms. The early story is set in the Great Wilderness, where Stone Village provides Shi Hao with his childhood home.[8]

The setting expands progressively through locations such as the Void God Realm, the Hundred Broken Mountains, ancient academies, the Nine Heavens and Ten Earths, and the Sea of Boundaries.

The cultivation system emphasizes physical refinement, supernatural abilities, inherited techniques and increasingly powerful realms. Individual advancement is repeatedly connected to wider historical conflicts and the survival of entire civilizations.

The setting also incorporates motifs associated with Chinese mythology and traditional fantasy. In a 2018 report on Tencent Video's animation programming, Perfect World was presented as a work that drew on classical Chinese mythology and traditional cultural elements.[9]

Characters

[edit]

Shi Hao (石昊) is the protagonist of the novel. He is born with the Supreme Bone, loses it during childhood, and is subsequently raised in Stone Village. His growth from a village child into a powerful cultivator forms the central narrative of the work.

Creation

[edit]

Background

[edit]

Perfect World was written by Chen Dong and followed several of his earlier novels, including Undying and Immortal, Tomb of Fallen Gods, The World of Immortals, and Shrouding the Heavens. It continued his work in fantasy and xuanhuan fiction and became one of his major novels.[1][7]

Chen Dong began writing online fiction in 2004 and later became a professional web novelist. He joined the China Writers Association in 2013.[10]

Serialization

[edit]

Perfect World began serialization on Qidian Chinese on 16 August 2013.[1][11]

The novel was serialized until 4 August 2016, when its 2,014th and final chapter, "Unrivaled Through the Ages (Finale)", was published.[5]

Narrative conception

[edit]

The story opens with Shi Hao as a young boy in the Great Wilderness, where he grows up in Stone Village. His early encounters with ancient creatures, sacred objects, and rival groups introduce the world and establish the conflicts that drive the later story.[8]

The narrative therefore combines a coming-of-age structure with cultivation fantasy. Shi Hao's personal development remains the central thread even as the geographical and historical scope of the story expands.

The final volume reframes the protagonist's personal journey within a much larger historical conflict. Shi Hao establishes and protects the Heavenly Court before travelling into the Sea of Boundaries to confront the source of the darkness.[12]

Genre and influences

[edit]

Perfect World is a xuanhuan novel that incorporates elements of Eastern fantasy.[1]

The work uses conventions associated with Chinese cultivation fiction, including progressive cultivation realms, supernatural abilities, ancient inheritances, powerful clans, sects, legendary creatures and large-scale conflicts.

It combines these conventions with a coming-of-age narrative centered on Shi Hao and with an increasingly elaborate cosmology.

Early reception during serialization

[edit]

Perfect World quickly attracted attention after its publication and rapidly rose in major online-literature rankings. It soon became one of the most prominent works on the Qidian platform.[1]

During the second half of 2014, Perfect World ranked first on Baidu's mobile popularity chart and comprehensive index, and also topped the Shenma search rankings on UC Browser. It was among the most popular xuanhuan novels still in serialization at the time.[13]

The novel continued to rank highly in Qidian's monthly-ticket, reader-recommendation, and book-review rankings during its serialization.[14]

Development as an intellectual property

[edit]

Perfect World was among the works adapted into mobile games as Chinese web fiction expanded into other media.[15]

While Perfect World was still being serialized, it was adapted into the mobile game Taigu Xianyu. The adaptation was part of the broader expansion of Chinese web fiction into games and other forms of entertainment during the mid-2010s.[16]

[edit]

Print editions of Perfect World were published by Shandong Pictorial Publishing House, with individual volumes released on different dates.[17]

Volume 14 was published in November 2016, while later volumes continued to appear in print editions.[17]

Volume 31, identified as the final printed volume, was published in June 2023 by Shandong Pictorial Publishing House.[12]

Authorial position

[edit]

By the time Perfect World began serialization in 2013, Chen Dong had already published several successful web novels, including Tomb of Fallen Gods, The World of Immortals, and Shrouding the Heavens. He had also become a professional web novelist and a member of the China Writers Association.[10]

Chen Dong is a platinum-level author on Qidian and a member of the China Writers Association.[17]

Legacy of the creation period

[edit]

The creation and serialization of Perfect World occurred during a period of rapid expansion in Chinese online literature. The industry's movement toward adaptation and IP development provided a commercial environment in which popular web novels could be transformed into games, animation and other derivative works.[16][15]

Themes

[edit]

The novel explores growth, survival, power, identity and the relationship between individual ability and historical forces.

A recurring theme is the transformation of a vulnerable child into an exceptionally powerful cultivator. Shi Hao's loss of the Supreme Bone creates an early conflict between inherited power and personal development.[8]

The novel also emphasizes family, friendship and loyalty. Stone Village remains an important emotional reference point for Shi Hao even after his journey expands across multiple realms.

Another major theme is the tension between individual cultivation and collective survival. As the story progresses, conflicts increasingly concern entire realms and civilizations rather than individual rivalries.

The later narrative also explores mortality, historical memory and the possibility of overcoming the limitations imposed by previous generations.

Reception

[edit]

Literary and cultural reception

[edit]

Perfect World became one of Chen Dong's best-known novels during its serialization and is regarded as one of his major works.[7]

Perfect World was selected as the "Best Work of the Year" in a 2014 annual review of Chinese online literature. The selection took into account the novel's overall quality, plot, innovation, commercial value, and artistic value.[13]

The novel was also described as a highly popular xuanhuan work, with particular attention to its large-scale world-building and strong performance across several popularity rankings.[13]

Reader reception

[edit]

Reader ratings for individual print volumes vary considerably.

Volume 14 has a Douban rating of 5.2 based on 112 ratings.[17]

Volume 16 has a rating of 6.0 based on 134 ratings.[18]

Volume 20 has a rating of 4.8 based on 88 ratings.[19]

The final printed volume, Volume 31, has a recorded rating of 7.2 based on 14 ratings.[12]

IP recognition

[edit]

In 2016, Perfect World was included in the Top 10 of the China IP Value List's online-literature category at the China Pan-Entertainment Index Festival.[20]

In 2017, Perfect World was ranked No. 45 on the Mopian–Hurun Original Literature IP Value List, with a reported score of 67,411.[21]

The Hurun ranking was an IP-value assessment rather than a literary award, and therefore provides evidence of the property's perceived commercial and adaptation value rather than a direct judgment of literary quality.[21]

Adaptations

[edit]

Manga

[edit]

A manga adaptation of Perfect World was published in multiple volumes.[22]

Game adaptation

[edit]

A video game based on Perfect World was announced in January 2016, with Chen Dong serving as a supervisor of the project.[23]

The Perfect World mobile game received a publication licence in 2019 and was later released by Tencent. It attracted more than 2.6 million new users within its first 12 hours of release.[24]

Donghua

[edit]

A donghua adaptation of Perfect World was announced in 2018. The series draws on traditional Chinese cultural elements and follows Shi Hao's growth from childhood into a powerful cultivator.[25]

The animated series was produced by Fuxi Film and Yi'en Animation, with Tencent Penguin Pictures as the producing company. The production was directed by Wang Chengguo and Zhang Shuai.[26]

The first season premiered exclusively on Tencent Video on 23 April 2021 and consisted of 26 episodes. Production continued after the first season, with Fuxi Film serving as the main animation studio and Tencent Video as the distribution platform.[26]

The series continued with additional seasons and became a long-running animated production on Tencent Video, with new episodes released on a regular basis.[27]

The international distribution of the series has continued alongside its Chinese release. The series is distributed internationally as Perfect World, with English-language promotional material and episode trailers released for overseas audiences. New promotional material has continued to be released as the series progressed.[27]

The production later expanded beyond its regular episodic format through special episodes. In 2023, four special-story projects were announced, including arcs such as "The Battle of the Two Stones" and "War King's Sorrow". The first theatrical-length project, Perfect World: Ashes of Fire, was released on 15 September 2024.[28][29]

The series continued into its fifth season in 2025. Two six-episode installments, Breakthrough and Nine Heavens and Ten Earths, were released as part of Perfect World Season 5 and were classified as online animated productions.[30]

The fifth season was registered in two separate six-episode installments, for a total of 12 licensed episodes across the two entries.[30]

The series continued to release new episodes in 2026. Tencent Video Animation's international channel published trailers for later episodes.[31]

Theatrical films

[edit]

Perfect World: Ashes of Fire was released on Tencent Video on 14 September 2024. Before its release, it received more than 2.8 million advance reservations and surpassed a Tencent Video popularity score of 20,000 within 25 minutes. It also recorded more than 10 million discussion interactions and over 100 million bullet-screen comments. It was the first production in Tencent Video's year-round animation lineup to receive a theatrical special.[32][33][34][35]

A second theatrical film, Perfect World: Nine Tribulations Burning the Heavens, was announced in 2025. Tencent Video was listed as its producer and distributor, with Fuxi Film as the animation production company.[36]

Donghua reception

[edit]

Since its debut in 2021, the Perfect World donghua has achieved several audience and platform milestones. It became the first Chinese animation on Tencent Video to move from a seasonal release schedule to year-round production. The series also became the first animation on the platform to surpass 10 million discussion interactions and 100 million bullet-screen comments.[34]

The series has also recorded high engagement for individual episodes and special installments. In December 2023, the special episode War King's Sorrow reached a reported Tencent Video popularity score of 23,285. It ranked first in Tencent Video's xuanhuan, Chinese animation, and 3D animation categories, while its bullet-screen comments exceeded 100,000 within seven hours of release.[35]

The first theatrical special, Perfect World: Ashes of Fire, also achieved strong platform engagement. Before its release on Tencent Video on 14 September 2024, it received more than 2.8 million advance reservations. Its Tencent Video popularity score exceeded 20,000 within 25 minutes of release, the fastest such achievement among animated IPs released in 2024.[32]

By May 2016, Perfect World had accumulated five million recommendation votes and continued to rank highly in Qidian's monthly-ticket, reader-recommendation, and book-review rankings during the final stages of its serialization.[14]

Literary recognition

[edit]

Perfect World was selected as the "Best Work of the Year" in the 2014 annual assessment of Chinese online literature. The selection considered the novel's overall quality, plot, innovation, commercial value, and artistic value.[13]

Printed editions of Perfect World also note that Chen Dong received the 2014 Chinese Online Literature Annual Good Work recognition for the novel in 2015.[17]

Industry and IP rankings

[edit]

Perfect World was included in the Top 10 of the online-literature category in the China IP Value List at the 2016 China Pan-Entertainment Index Festival.[20]

The following year, the Mopian–Hurun Original Literature IP Value List ranked Perfect World No. 45, with a reported score of 67,411.[21]

Cultural and commercial significance

[edit]

Perfect World became one of Chen Dong's major works and developed beyond its original web-novel format into a wider IP encompassing print editions, manga, games and animation.[7][22][24]

Its inclusion in the 2016 China IP Value List and the 2017 Mopian–Hurun ranking reflects its growing recognition as a major Chinese literary IP during the mid-2010s.[20][21]

Relationship to other works

[edit]

Perfect World is connected to Chen Dong's other major fantasy novels, particularly Shrouding the Heavens and The Sacred Ruins.[7]

The three web novels are commonly treated as a connected sequence, with Perfect World set in an earlier period of the shared fictional chronology than Shrouding the Heavens and The Sacred Ruins. Perfect World follows Shi Hao, Shrouding the Heavens follows Ye Fan, and The Sacred Ruins follows Chu Feng. The three works consequently form a chronological sequence within Chen Dong's broader fictional setting, while each novel has its own protagonist and primary narrative period.[7][41]
