Neil Gillis is an American music publishing executive. In 2010, he co-founded Round Hill Music, and in 2024 established CollectivRights Management. He has held executive positions at Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), Warner Chappell Music, Concord Music Group, Dimensional Music Publishing, S1 Songs America and Alfred Music. He has served on the board of directors of the National Music Publishers' Association.

Early life and education

Gillis graduated from Sachem High School on Long Island, New York, in 1980. He played in the school's pit band, marching band, orchestra and jazz band, and studied music theory. He attended Hofstra University, initially intending to study music education before changing his major to Music Merchandising. While at Hofstra, he interned at Cherry Lane Music, where he learned about the music publishing business. Gillis graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Music Merchandising.[1][2]

BMI

In 1986, Gillis joined Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) in its International Department. During his fourteen years at BMI, Gillis held positions in the International, Film/TV Licensing, Performing Rights and Writer/Publisher Relations departments before becoming vice president of Writer/Publisher Relations. In 2002, Gillis, as vice president of advertising and A&R, oversaw the creative exploitation of Warner Chappell's music catalog for advertising and for film and television licensing. He developed online search tools to improve access to the company's catalog for music supervisors, advertisers and producers.[3][4]

In 1990, Gillis served as Warner Chappell's VP of Advertising and A&R.[4][5][6]

Concord Music Group

In 2006, Gillis joined Concord Music Group as East Coast general manager. He was responsible for overseeing the company's music publishing operations, including catalog development, copyright administration, licensing and songwriter relations.[4][7][8]

Dimensional Music Publishing

Later in 2006, Gillis was named president of Dimensional Music Publishing, a Nashville-based music publisher and rights management company, where he oversaw publishing, licensing and copyright operations.[4][8][9]

S1 Songs America

In 2009, Gillis joined S1 Songs America as president, where he oversaw the company's music publishing operations and songwriter relations.[4]

Round Hill Music

In 2010, Gillis co-founded Round Hill Music with Richard Rowe and Josh Gruss. As president, he oversaw the company's music publishing, rights management and catalog acquisitions. During his tenure, Round Hill acquired music catalogs including North American rights to several early The Beatles songs, the catalog of The Offspring, and Carlin Music, whose catalog includes works associated with artists such as Elvis Presley, James Brown, Billie Holiday, Bobby Darin, and AC/DC.[10][11][12]

CollectivRights Management

In 2024, Gillis founded CollectivRights Management. The company provides music publishing administration, rights management and licensing services for songwriters, publishers and music catalogs.[13]

Professional activities

Gillis has served on the board of directors of the National Music Publishers' Association. In 2021, he participated in the Association of Independent Music Publishers' Global Music Publishing Summit as a panelist on the "Indie Perspective" discussion of independent music publishing.[14][15]
