Mucho Barato is the debut studio album by Mexican hip-hop group Control Machete, released on February 14, 1996, in Mexico and everywhere else on February 13, 1997, under Mercury Records and PolyGram Discos.[1] The tracks on the album were written by Fermín IV, Raúl Chapa, and Antonio Hernández. The album was entirely produced by Toy Selectah and Jason Roberts. Released entirely in early 1996 and 1997,[2] it is widely regarded as a watershed moment that helped define and popularize mainstream Spanish-language hardcore hip-hop across Latin America.
Critical reception
[edit]The album is widely recognized as the first massive commercial rap success across Mexico and Latin America. Critics praised the group's no-nonsense, aggressive rhymes and gritty street slang. The album is also highlighted for stark, sinewy beats fusing hip-hop with regional Mexican samples. The track "¿Comprendes, Mendes?" became an iconic crossover anthem.
