Molyko is the student hub of the University of Buea, a fast growing macro-neighborhood that hosts many smaller neighborhoods like Mayor Street, UB South(Dirty South), Malingo, and many others. It is structured around key streets like Malingo Street, Biaka Street, Mayor Ekema Street, and the Molyko Avenue(D61).[1] These streets anchor educational, religious, commercial, recreational, and financial institutions making Molyko a major neighborhood in Buea. Molyko hosts students and persons from diverse cultures and regions, making it a hub for youth culture, globalization, and social divergence and challenges.[2][3]

History and Growth

Molyko(Moliko) developed as part of the expansion of the colonial Buea into surrounding neighborhoods. During the German colonial period, Buea became the capital of Kamerun in 1901 under Gorvernor Jesko Von Puttkamer. After WWI during the British expansion of Buea, Molyko gradually grew into a residential and educational area, spiking with the creation of the University of Buea in the 1990s which attracted students and spurred the economic, and social development of the area.[4][5][6][7][8]

Situated in Buea, in the South West region of Cameroon, Molyko is found at the foot of Mount Cameroon, and is the main entrance to Buea.[9] [10]

Education

It is an educational hub with diverse primary and higher educational institutions. Some of which include: the University of Buea: Founded as a University Center in 1985 and elevated to full university status in 1992, it is Cameroon's first English-speaking public university, serving thousands of students across eight faculties and several professional schools.[4] Government bilingual Grammar School Molyko (BGS Molyko) which was established in 1968, is one of Cameroon's most emblematic schools, which stands to promote bilingual education, producing generations of professionals and leaders.[11] [12][13] Some of these leaders include Dorothy Njeuma, the first Vice Chancellor of the University of Buea, who is also a renowned Cameroonian politician. Other institutions like Biaka University Institute of Buea(BUIB), HIBMAT, and HIMS add up to rich academic environment of molyko.[14][15]

Religion and Community

Hosting several religious and community Institutions, this neighborhood is diversified in worship practices. The Divine Mercy Co-Cathedral dedicated in January 2025 is the central liturgical and community hub for the Diocese of Buea, [16][17][18] while Presbyterian Church Molyko, commonly called PC Molyko, stands as the main worship site for Presbyterian Christians who live in the heart of the area.[19] Numerous pentecostal churches, prayer houses and mosques are also found in here, indicating how diversified worship notions co-exist in the neighborhood. [20][21]

Sports and Leisure

Molyko's youth concentrated nature makes it a busy environment, where the occupants enjoy a wide array of recreational and sporting activities. Some recreational facilities, student clubs, and entertainment venues contribute to molyko's vibrant leisure culture. Molyko Omnisport Stadium stands out as a multi-purpose stadium with a sitting capacity of about 3,200 though often hosting above this capacity. It is used for football, athletics, cultural events and stands out as the start and finish line for the Mount Cameroon race of Hope .[22][23]
