Mohol is a taluka (town) and a municipal council in Solapur district in the Indian state of Maharashtra.^[1] It contains the Nagnath Temple, one of the most important for the Nagesh community.^[2]

History

During the medieval period, particularly under the rule of the Bahmani Sultanate and Bijapur Sultanate, Mohol was known as 'Sonalpur'.^[3] An inscription from 1316 AD found in Kamati, Mohol taluka, confirms this historical name.^[3]

The territories comprising the present Solapur district were historically partitioned among the Ahmednagar, Pune, and Satara districts.^[4] In 1838, Solapur was initially formed as a sub-district under Ahmednagar, encompassing the sub-divisions of Mohol, Barshi, Madha, Karmala, Indi, Hippargi, and Muddebihal.^[5]^[4] Following a temporary abolition in 1864, the district was reconstituted in 1869 (and finalized in 1871) by combining Mohol, Barshi, Madha, Karmala, and Solapur with sub-divisions transferred from Satara district.^[5]^[4]

Timeline

1838: Mohol became part of the newly created Solapur sub-district under Ahmednagar district.^[4]
1864: The sub-district of Solapur (including Mohol) was temporarily abolished.^[4]
1869–1871: Solapur district was re-established, comprising the sub-divisions of Mohol, Barshi, Madha, Karmala, Pandharpur, and Sangola.^[5]^[4]
1875: The Malshiras sub-division was transferred from Satara district and annexed to Solapur district.^[4]
1949: Post-independence administrative reorganization formally established Mohol taluka alongside Akkalkot and Mangalwedha talukas.^[4]
