Middlesbrough bus station serves the town of Middlesbrough, in North Yorkshire, England. It is located around 1⁄4 mi (400 m) from the town's railway station.
History
[edit]It was opened in 1982, at a cost of £5.3 million, by the actress Pat Phoenix.[1] It stands partly on the site of the previous bus station, which belonged to United Automobile Services.[citation needed]
From mid-July 2012, the bus station was partially closed for around six weeks, to allow for improvement work to take place – at a cost of around £1.5 million. Work was carried out in order to improve accessibility for disabled people, by creating low floor access at the majority of stops. Work was also undertaken to rebuild the main concourse and a partial reconstruction of the ramps.[2][3]
In January 2024, Tees Valley Combined Authority announced a £15 million investment to refurbish the bus station.[4]
Accidents and incidents
[edit]On 2 February 2015, an Arriva North East vehicle, which was operating service 28, collided with one of the bus station's south stands. There were no injuries, but significant damage was sustained to the building's roof and windows.[5]
On 23 December 2021, an Arriva North East vehicle, which was out of service at the time, was shunted into the bus station's north stands by a Go North East coach. As above, there were no injuries, but damage was sustained to the building, as well as damage to the railings, roof and windows.[6]
Operators
[edit]Local services are provided predominantly by Arriva North East, Stagecoach North East and Go North East.[7]
The key areas they serve include:
- Stagecoach services 36, 37 and 38 combine to provide up to six buses per hour to Teesside Park, Thornaby, Stockton-on-Tees and Norton, with an hourly extension to University Hospital of North Tees, and three buses per hour continuing to Billingham, Greatham and Hartlepool. The company also operates frequent services to Acklam, Coulby Newham, James Cook University Hospital, Hemlington and Park End.
- Arriva operates a number of local services, with destinations including Darlington, Guisborough, Ingleby Barwick, Redcar, Nunthorpe, Saltburn and Stokesley. The company also operates regional services X12 to Durham and Newcastle, and X93 to Guisborough, Whitby and Scarborough.
- Go North East operate the X10 express service to Peterlee, Dalton Park and Newcastle, using a fleet of four high-specification double-deck Alexander Dennis Enviro400 MMC vehicles, branded in a gold and purple livery.
