Megan Emily Romer (born 1983) is an American journalist and democratic socialist political activist. Romer is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), where she was elected as national co-chair with Ashik Siddique from 2023 to 2027.[1][2][3][4]
Biography
[edit source]Romer grew up "very poor in a trailer park" in rural New York.[2] Her father was a paramedic and her mother was a nursing aide, who, she said, worked in lifesaving jobs but "could not afford groceries."[2] Graduating at Charles O. Dickerson High School and in a community college, she believes that "people do not need academic credentials to build political power".[2] She describes herself as a "socialist with Presbyterian characteristics."[2]
She began following political and societal issues in her early 30s through Jon Stewart's The Daily Show.[2] During the 2016 United States presidential election, Romer campaigned for Hillary Clinton.[2] She joined the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in Louisiana after two church trips to Cuba with local Democratic women's club.[2]
Politics
[edit source]After DSA's 2023 National Convention, Romer and Ashik Siddique were elected as national co-chairs, a newly created position.[5][6] In 2025, they were re-elected as co-chairs.[7][8]
In October 2025, co-chairs Romer and Siddique visited Stockholm for a meeting with the Swedish Left Party, German Die Linke and Norwegian Socialist Left Party. They both praised Claudia Sheinbaum's presidency in Mexico and hoped to field a similarly successful DSA candidate in the 2028 US presidential election.[9][10]
On 27 July 2026, after a Fox News interview,[11] Romer's defense of the DSA platform's call to "eliminate the U.S. Senate, replace the presidency and the Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary chosen by the Congress, pass aggressive wealth taxes on rich individuals and corporations, demilitarize police force, abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, defund The Pentagon, abolish prison systems, and the more" drew massive controversy and criticism.[12][13][14][15]
