Mandaadi (transl. Sea Wanderer)[a] is a 2026 Indian Tamil-language sports action drama film written and directed by Mathimaran Pugazhendhi and produced by Elred Kumar under RS Infotainment.[3] The film stars Soori in the titular role and Suhas (in his Tamil film debut) alongside Mahima Nambiar, Sathyaraj, Mithun Jai Sankar, Ravindra Vijay and Bala Saravanan.

The film was officially announced in January 2025 under the tentative title Soori's Next; the official title was announced that April.[4][5] Filming began in mid-2025 and wrapped in April 2026. The film has music composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, cinematography handled by S. R. Kathir and editing by Pradeep E. Ragav.

Mandaadi was released in theatres on 10 September 2026, coinciding with the Vinayagar Chaturthi weekend in standard, IMAX, EPIQ and Dolby Cinema formats to critical acclaim. The film was a commercial success grossing ₹111.80 crore on a budget of ₹75 crore, becoming the 4th highest grossing Tamil film of 2026.[6][7]

Plot

Maari, the son Angel Rakkamma and Singaram starts a new team of sail boat which creates a clash between Kittan, the son of Sattapuli. This becomes a big rival between both and Maari tries to kill Kittan in the festival but Sattapuli, saves him. Afraid of this incident, Baagam Priyazh, the niece of Muthukaali sends Maari escapes to Chennai where Muthukaali works as lifeguard in VGP water theme park. Muthukaali is a legendary traditional boat racer of "Mugavai Maindhans" in Ramanathapuram and he is also s friend of Singaram who is Maari's father. Singaram, Muthukaali and Sattapuli are all once a groups of friends and boat riders of "Mugavai Maindhans" which is leaded by Machamuni who is the father of Angel Rakkamma. Muthukaali has exiled himself to work as a lifeguard in Chennai following a tragic rift and rival with Sattapuli. In his absence, the ruthless Sattapuli, a friend turned foe of Muthukaali dominates the ocean with the "Tsunami Riders", fuelling a violent rivalry between neighbouring fishing communities. Spurred by his friend's crisis, Muthukaali returns to Mugavaipattnam with Maari and challenges Sattapuli to win this year's boat race. He returns to the shores to train an underdog crew of local fishermen for the high-stakes festival race. In a Practice match the team performs well and take a lead, but the boat gets damaged just before their victory. Kaali finds out the rope deliberately sabotaged by Kittan, son of Sattapuli, before the race. Kaali gets into a violent confrontation where Maari intervenes and tells he will blackout of the race, due to players getting injured, but Kaali declares whoever wins the festival race must be village team and the loser must never compete again. Maari initially was angry with Muthukkali because he has written (pachai kuthuthal) his mother's name "Angel" in his and the reason behind is her mother was Muthukaali's ex-lover. After the big rival in practice match, Muthukaali reveals the flashback of what happened in his life in 2006. In his young age, Muthukaali, Sattapuli, Singaram are all one gang of friends and powerful boat riders of "Mugavai Mainthans". They are always a tough competitiors and always te winners in the boat race. Muthukaali and Angel Rakkamm, the daughter of their mentor Machamuni falls in love with each other. One day, Machamuni, Muthukaali and Sattapuli notcied a business man with a fibre boat in their place saying they are going to manufacture such boats and sell in the market. This makes Machamuni upset because he felt that this fiber boat only would be exist in future for fishing and race and there will be no value for the boat made in wood. Being the scenerio like this, Muthukkaali suggest an ides to Sattapuli that why he can't manufacture the boat before outsiders to start this business and dominate the locals. This feels a good ides for Sattapuli but another frined in the gang teased Sattapuli by saying that his father a thief in Burma and came here and hiding. This makes a gang war between the group ann Muthukaali supports Sattapuli, all the frineds beat that friend and eliminated from their group. But Muthukaali never know the cunnings and another face of Sattapuli and his father. They both theft the amount of Tsunami relief fund from a government office which noticed by the security guard but Sattapuli killed the guard and burned him along with the office builinding which later turned the into fire accident so that hiding the theft and murder. Sattapuli successfully started the boat manufacture business and Muthukaali also joined with hima and supporting him which is not liked by Machamuni. Sattapuli started a new team named "Tsunami Riders" and participates in boat races. On one situation, Sattapuli got angered and Killed Machamuni.

Production

After the success of Viduthalai Part 2, in mid-January 2025, RS Infotainment confirmed its next project with Soori in the lead role, directed by Mathimaran Pugazhendhi, a former assistant director of Vetrimaaran[8] who earlier directed Selfie (2022).[9] On 18 April 2025, Soori officially revealed the title of his sixth film in the lead role[10] to be a sea-based action drama titled Mandaadi,[11] with Vetrimaaran as the creative producer of the film.[12] Apart from Soori, the film stars Suhas and Mahima Nambiar in the lead role alongside Sathyaraj, Achyuth Kumar, Sachana Namidass, and Ravindra Vijay in pivotal roles.[13] Suhas, a Telugu actor, made his Tamil film debut.[14] The technical team consists of music composer G. V. Prakash Kumar, cinematographer S. R. Kathir, editor Pradeep E. Ragav and stunt choreographer Peter Hein.[15]

Filming had begun by May 2025,[16] and was described as progressing at a "rapid pace" by August.[17] That October, production was suspended after a boat used for filming capsized and equipment worth almost ₹1 crore (US$100,000) was lost.[18] However, production eventually resumed,[19][20] and wrapped in April 2026.[21]

Music

The film has music and background score composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar.[22] The audio rights were acquired by Mudway Records, a new label established by the production house with Divo as the digital partner.[23] The first single titled "Mandaadi Mandaadi" was released on 18 July 2026.[24] The second single "Usure Needhan Pulla" was released on 14 August 2026.[25] The pre-release audio launch event was held on 28 August 2026 at Chennai Trade Centre, Chennai.[26] The entire album consisting of 5 tracks was released on 28 August 2026.[27]

Mandaadi was released on 10 September 2026, coinciding with the Vinayagar Chaturthi weekend along with Sardar 2.[28] The film was initially scheduled to release on 4 September 2026 but was pushed by a week.[29] It was released in Dolby Cinema,[30] IMAX,[31] EPIQ and standard formats.[32]

Distribution

The distribution rights of Tamil Nadu were acquired by Red Giant Movies.[33] In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana they were acquired by Mythri Movie Distributors.[28]

Critical response

Bhuvanesh Chandar of The Hindu described the film as an engaging and smooth-sailing sports action drama, praising the performances of Soori and Suhas and the way the film handles its sporting elements.[35] Yashaswini Sri of The Indian Express praised Soori and Suhas for their performances in the water-based sequences, but felt that the film lost momentum during its portions set on land.[36]

Latha Srinivasan of NDTV gave the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and praised Soori's performance, describing Mandaadi as an engaging coastal sports drama.[37] Roopa Radhakrishnan of The Times of India rated the film 3 out of 5, describing it as an uneven journey that ultimately builds towards a strong finish.[38]

Prathyush Parasuraman of The Hollywood Reporter India praised Soori's charisma but criticised the film's predictable storyline.[39] Akshay Kumar of Cinema Express gave a favourable assessment, praising the film's sailing sequences while noting some turbulence in its narrative.[40]

Box office

Mandaadi grossed ₹6.55 crore worldwide on its opening day, including ₹5.55 crore from India and ₹1 crore from overseas. The film recorded this opening despite having fewer shows in Tamil Nadu than Sardar 2.[41] The film grossed more than ₹100 crore worldwide after 10 days of release.[42]
