Maipú is a commune in the Santiago Province in the Santiago Metropolitan Region in Chile, forming part of the Greater Santiago conurbation. It was founded on 16 February 1821 and is historically significant as the site of the Battle of Maipú (5 April 1818), where Chile's independence was consolidated. With a population of 503,635, Maipú is the 2nd most populous commune in the country and is predominantly inhabited by a middle-class population.[4]
Demographics
[edit]As of the 2024 census, the population is 503,635, of which 47.8% are male and 52.2% are female. People under 15 years old make up 16.1% of the population, and people over 65 years old make up 14.1%. 99.5% of the population is urban and 0.5% is rural.[4]

Immigration
[edit]As of the 2024 census, immigrants make up 6.1% of the population - 5.2% are from South America, 0.8% from North America, 0.1% from Europe, 0.1% from Asia, 0.003% from Africa, and 0.003% from Oceania.[4]
Administration
[edit]As a commune, Maipú is a third-level administrative division of Chile administered by a municipal council, headed by an alcalde who is directly elected every four years. The 2024-2028 alcalde is Tomás Vodanovic (FA).[12][13] The communal council had the following members:

Within the electoral divisions of Chile, Maipú is represented in the Chamber of Deputies by Pepe Auth (PPD) and Mónica Zalaquett (UDI) as part of the 20th electoral district, which consists entirely of the Santiago commune. The commune is represented in the Senate by Guido Girardi Lavín (PPD) and Jovino Novoa Vásquez (UDI) as part of the 7th senatorial constituency (Santiago-West).
