Kanan Garayev (born 5 June 2002) is an Azerbaijani chess player who holds the title of International Master (IM). He won the gold medal in the rapid event at the World Schools Chess Championships in 2014 and is a two-time winner of the Vugar Hashimov Open tournament.[1][2]
Early life and education
[edit]Garayev was born on 5 June 2002 in Baku, Azerbaijan. He completed his secondary education at Secondary School No. 316 before enrolling at the Azerbaijan Sports Academy, earning his higher education degree.
Chess career
[edit]Garayev began playing chess at the age of five. During his youth career, he won the Baku Championships in the under-8, under-10, under-12, and under-14 age categories. He also became the Azerbaijani national champion in the under-14 and under-18 divisions.
In 2014, Garayev competed at the World Schools Chess Championships held in Kavala, Greece, where he won the gold medal in the rapid competition and the bronze medal in the blitz competition.[3]
He was awarded the title of FIDE Master (FM) in 2017 and earned the International Master (IM) title in 2018.[4]
In 2022, Garayev won the Vezerkepzo Winter GM tournament in Budapest, Hungary.[5]
Other activities
[edit]Since 2022, Garayev has served as an official commentator for the international Vugar Gashimov Memorial super tournament. He has provided commentary for the editions held in Baku (2022), Shusha (2023), Gabala[disambiguation needed] (2024), and Khankendi (2025).[6]
