Jorge Buchanan Leese (21 July 1867 – ?) was a Chilean businessman, nitrate industrialist and politician who served as a member of the Senate of Chile.
A member of the Liberal Party, Buchanan represented Antofagasta from 1909 to 1915.[1]
Biography
[edit]Buchanan was born in Valparaíso on 21 July 1867, the son of George Buchanan and Sofía Mercedes Leese y Baeza. He married Luisa Valdés Hidalgo, with whom he had children. He received his early education in Valparaíso and later continued his studies in Europe, particularly in England and Germany.[1]
A member of the Liberal Party, Buchanan entered municipal politics in Iquique, where he was elected councillor and first mayor in 1900, remaining in municipal office until 1903.[1]
In 1909, he was elected senator for Antofagasta for the 1909–1915 term. In 1912, the Senate appointed him to represent the institution at the centenary celebrations of the Cortes of Cádiz in Spain. During the visit, he was decorated by King Alfonso XIII with the Order of Isabella the Catholic.[1]
Following the end of his senatorial term, Buchanan travelled again to Europe and returned to Chile with his wife in early 1920. He subsequently concentrated primarily on the nitrate industry and developed extensive commercial interests in Chile and abroad.[1]
He was a partner in Buchanan, Jones y Cía., an import business that administered the New Tamarugal Nitrate Co. Ltd. in Tarapacá and the Compañía Salitrera El Loa in Antofagasta. He was also involved in steamship and maritime insurance businesses and later participated in agricultural enterprises. Among other corporate positions, he served as director of the Sociedad Beneficiadora de Iquique and the Compañía de Seguros Sol de Chile.[1]
Buchanan also served as commercial counsellor at the Chilean Embassy in London. He belonged to several social organizations, including the Club de la Unión, Club de Viña del Mar and Valparaíso Sporting Club, and was president of the Club de Valparaíso between 1912 and 1913.[1]
