Jasper Soloff is an American photographer and director. His work has appeared in Vogue, GQ, Paper Magazine, Dazed, i-D Magazine, Nylon Magazine, Out Magazine, Gay Times and Billboard. He has directed music videos for RCA Records, Capitol Records, Sony Music and Roc Nation,[2] as well as global advertising campaigns for brands including Maybelline, Fenty Beauty, Amazon Fashion and Dropbox.[3][4] In 2023, he was named the face of Canon's EOS R8 camera,[5][4] and he is developing his first documentary feature, Atitlán: Echoes of the Lake.[6]
Education
[edit]Soloff was born in New York City and graduated from Laurel Springs School while also studying dance at Ballet Hispanico and the Gelsey Kirkland Academy of Classical Ballet. He then attended Sarah Lawrence College where he began studying photography in his freshmen year. He studied black and white film photography, developing his darkroom skills under the direction of Michael Spano. He studied color photography under visiting professor Katie Murray. He also studied under Alex Schady at Central Saint Martins.[7]
Career
[edit]Soloff has photographed pop culture icons such as Billie Eilish, Dixie & Charli D'Amelio, Dove Cameron, DJ Khaled, Iggy Azalea, Russell Westbrook, Anderson Paak, Emma Chamberlain, Billy Porter (actor), Suni Lee, and Pete Davidson.[8]
He has directed music videos including videos for "Alone" by Loren Gray, "Rascal (Superstar)" by Tinashe,[9] "stupid"[10] & "all my friends are fake" by Tate McRae,[11] "Special" & "HERE'S YOUR SONG" by Chloe Lilac, "Keep On Coming" & "Jump The Fence" by Gia Woods, "Life" by Katy Tiz, "Middle Of A Heartbreak" by Leland and "Liquor Store" by Anna Shoemaker. He also directed the videos for "Makeup Drawer" by Isaac Dunbar (2020),[12] "Cashmere" by Tkay Maidza (2021)[13] and "Narcissist" by Lauren Spencer-Smith (2022).[14] Soloff is the creative director for the Maybelline "Press Play" global ad campaign featuring Gigi Hadid.[15] Soloff's music videos with Tate McRae and Billy Porter have appeared in Times Square along with his Forever 21 ad campaign featuring Alexis Ren. His campaign work has also included Fenty Beauty featuring Tommy Dorfman, Amazon Fashion, Smashbox and a Dropbox collaboration with Allure featuring the drag performance artist Chiquitita.[3][6]
In 2023, Soloff signed with the London-based production company Curly Films for UK representation,[3] and Canon named him the face of its EOS R8 full-frame camera, featuring him and his work in the launch campaign.[5][4]
Soloff is developing Atitlán: Echoes of the Lake, a nonfiction feature documentary set at Lake Atitlán in Guatemala that follows Maro, a young Mayan woman, amid the lake's environmental decline. The project is produced by Sarah Sutton and fiscally sponsored by Film Independent.[6]
In 2026, Soloff photographed Paper's Pride cover story, featuring filmmaker John Waters alongside a group of queer artists and performers.[16][17]
Artistic approach
[edit]Soloff trained in classical ballet before turning to photography and has said that his dance background informs the way he directs movement on set.[18] Discussing his portraiture in an August 2026 interview with the music magazine Rombo, he said that with famous subjects he tries to set aside their public image — "My job isn't to photograph the idea of Billie Eilish" — focusing instead on the person standing in front of his camera in that moment.[18]
