Ideonella is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria in the family Sphaerotilaceae and the order Burkholderiales.[1] The type species is Ideonella dechloratans, which can grow anaerobically using chlorate as an electron acceptor.[2]
Taxonomy
[edit]Ideonella was formerly placed in the family Comamonadaceae. Genome-based revisions of the closest relatives of that family supported their separation into Sphaerotilaceae, in which Ideonella is now classified.[3][4] As of August 2026, LPSN recognizes 11 species with validly published and correct names in the genus.[1]
Characteristics
[edit]Species of Ideonella exhibit differing metabolic characteristics. In addition to the chlorate respiration of I. dechloratans, I. azotifigens is an aerobic diazotroph capable of nitrogen fixation. Its type strain was isolated from grass rhizosphere soil.[5]
