On September 30, 2021, technology analyst Dez Blanchfield initiated the concept via social media as a lighthearted tribute to enterprise computing infrastructure.[3] Blanchfield designated October 7—coinciding with his birthday—as the recurring date for the celebration.[3][4] The initial call for participation was amplified across professional networks and supported by mainframe community members and IBM Systems leadership.[3][2]
