Huang Teng-hui (Chinese: 黃騰輝; born December 5, 1959), also known as Robert Huang, is a Taiwanese artist, entrepreneur and philanthropist. He was born in Hualien County, Taiwan, and graduated from the Department of International Trade at Tunghai University. He later studied aesthetics at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Tunghai University lists Huang as one of its Distinguished Alumni.[1][2]
In 1990, Huang founded Rose House, combining rose imagery, English afternoon tea culture and artistic aesthetics into a tea and restaurant brand in Taiwan. Tunghai University records describe Huang as the founder of the Rose House business group and note the influence of The Little Prince and rose symbolism on his later donation of a rose garden to the university.[3][4]
Huang's paintings often use roses as a central motif. His early works focused on roses, portraits and landscapes, while later works gradually moved toward modern and non-representational abstraction.[5][6]
Artistic career and style
[edit]Huang began painting in the 1990s. His works include portraits, rose paintings, landscapes and abstract paintings. In 2020, the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall held the exhibition Colorful Poetic Realm: Huang Teng-hui's Aesthetic Journey of Art Creation at the Yat-sen Gallery. The exhibition presented works from different periods of Huang's career, including early architectural sketches, realistic portraits, rose paintings, expressive landscapes and abstract works.[7][8]
Art critic Liao Jen-yi has described Huang's development as a shift from visual experience to more inward and poetic forms of expression. According to Liao, Huang's early work was influenced by artists such as Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Willem de Kooning, Ryuzaburo Umehara and Taiwanese painter Liao Chi-chun, and showed elements of Fauvism and Expressionism. After 2014, Huang's paintings increasingly moved toward non-representational abstraction, emphasizing color, composition and inner emotion.[9]
Roses remain one of Huang's most recognizable subjects. His rose paintings have often been linked to the symbolic imagery of The Little Prince. In related commentary, former National Museum of History director Liao Hsin-tien wrote that Huang's roses are not merely floral depictions, but are connected with symbolic meanings drawn from The Little Prince and from the artist's personal aesthetic system.[10]
Outside painting, Huang has also worked in design. His artwork has been used on credit-card designs, including a JCB card issued in Taiwan, and he has been involved in porcelain design projects connected with British commemorative porcelain.[11][12]
Exhibitions
[edit]In 2011, Huang held the solo exhibition Burning Colors of Happiness: Huang Teng-hui, Paris, Rose at the China Cultural Center in Paris. The exhibition included about 50 rose-themed works and was reported by Taiwanese media as a presentation of his rose paintings and works connected with The Little Prince.[13]
In 2020, Huang held the exhibition Colorful Poetic Realm: Huang Teng-hui's Aesthetic Journey of Art Creation at the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei. The exhibition reviewed approximately 30 years of his artistic development and included portraits, rose paintings, landscapes and abstract works.[14][15]
Philanthropy and public art
[edit]Huang has been involved in alumni philanthropy and campus public-art projects at Tunghai University, his alma mater. In 2024, Tunghai University announced that Huang would donate a rose garden to the university as part of its 70th anniversary projects. According to the university, the garden was designed to combine natural landscape, art and rose symbolism, and Huang stated that he hoped the project would become both a campus landscape feature and a space for reflection and aesthetic experience.[16]
The garden was later developed as the Tunghai Little Prince Rose Garden near Tunghai Lake. Tunghai University reported that the garden was fully donated by Huang and that he personally participated in the process from land preparation to rose planting. The project features about 20,000 rose plants arranged in two large rose-shaped formations, together with sculpture elements related to The Little Prince. The university described the garden as a new cultural and landscape landmark following its 70th anniversary.[17][18]
Auction records
[edit]Some of Huang's oil paintings have been sold at Poly Auction in Beijing. Data from the Artron Art Market Monitoring Center shows that The Little Prince's Rose Garden sold for RMB 212,800 at Beijing Poly on June 2, 2010; Red Rose and White Rose sold for RMB 483,000 at Beijing Poly on December 4, 2011; and Venice Night sold for RMB 115,000 at Beijing Poly on June 2, 2012.[19][20][21]
According to a Central News Agency report republished by Chinese media, Huang's The Little Prince's Rose Garden No. 3 sold for nearly RMB 600,000 at a Beijing Poly spring auction in 2011, setting a new auction high for his work at the time.[22]
Publications
[edit]Huang's publications mainly consist of art books and art calendars. In 2020, Colorful Poetic Realm: The Art World of Huang Teng-hui was published by the Palace Museum Press in Beijing. The book contains more than 180 works and reviews about 30 years of Huang's artistic practice.[23][24]
Huang has also issued art calendars. Media reports noted that the 2024 art calendar was designed by the team of INK Literary Monthly and made available through major Taiwanese book retailers. The 2026 collectible calendar was produced in cooperation with Tunghai University for the university's 70th anniversary and included selected paintings and poems corresponding to Huang's works.[25][26]
Business career
[edit]In 1990, Huang founded Rose House, a tea and restaurant brand that combined rose imagery with English afternoon tea culture. Taiwan Panorama reported that Huang's personal interest in roses and his artistic practice were closely connected with the development of Rose House's brand image.[27]
Tunghai University records also identify Huang as the founder of the Rose House business group and note his role as both entrepreneur and artist.[28]
