Hi no Matoi (Japanese: 緋の纏; "Akenomatoi") is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Miku Inui [ja]. It began serialization in Ichijinsha's shōjo manga magazine Comic Zero Sum WARD since July 2008, with its chapters collected in ten tankōbon volumes as of August 2014. The series has been on an extended hiatus since September 2014, due to the author's health.

Plot

During the Edo period, Hi no Matoi follows Isshin, the son of a samurai family who visits Edo while concealing his true identity. After being helped by Kotaro, Isshin becomes involved with the Edo firefighting group known as the "kumi".

As he begins living and working alongside the firefighters, Isshin learns the duties of the "hikeshi" and experiences the lives of ordinary people in Edo. Despite his noble background, he gradually forms bonds with his new companions and gains a deeper understanding of their values and responsibilities.

While adapting to life among the firefighters, Isshin must also deal with the problems surrounding his hidden identity and his position within his family. The series depicts his growth as he balances his past as a member of the samurai class with his new role among the people of Edo.

Written and illustrated by Miku Inui [ja], Hi no Matoi began serialization in Ichijinsha's shōjo manga magazine Comic Zero Sum WARD on July 16, 2008.[a] The series has been on an extended hiatus since September 16, 2014, due to the author's health.[b] Ichijinsha has collected its chapters into individual tankōbon volumes. The first volume was released on April 25, 2009.[9] As of August 25, 2014, ten volumes have been released.[10] A limited edition for the tenth volume that include a drama CD was released on May 21, 2014.[11][12]
