Guillermo Varas Contreras (26 November 1892 – 27 November 1968)[1] was a Chilean lawyer and politician and a member of the Traditionalist Conservative Party (PCT).[2]
He served as Minister of Health, Welfare and Social Assistance from 1948 to 1950 under President Gabriel González Videla.[2]
Varas also served as a member of the Court of Appeals of Santiago and as a board member of the Municipal Employees' Fund (CEM).[2]
Early life and family
[edit]Varas was the son of Fernando Varas Ossa and Josefina Contreras Villegas.[1] He married Magdalena Guzmán Guzmán, daughter of Juan Antonio Guzmán Cruz and Magdalena Guzmán Ovalle. They had four children: Eugenio, a lawyer and member of the Conservative Party who served as Superintendent of Insurance; Gabriela; María Magdalena, a lawyer and Conservative Party member; and Luz.[2]
Varas studied law at the University of Chile, where he qualified as a lawyer.[2]
Political career
[edit]During his tenure as minister, Varas was confronted with the aftermath of a fire on 3 December 1948 that completely destroyed the former School of Medicine of the University of Chile, located in the La Chimba area of the commune of Independencia. He subsequently arranged assistance for the students affected by the destruction of the school.[2]
