George Magere Masatu (born 12 June 1964) is a Tanzanian former footballer who played as a centre-back.[1] He played for Pamba and Simba in Tanzania and later played abroad in Oman and Indonesia. Masatu was also a member of the Tanzania national football team between 1989 and 1997, making 22 appearances and scoring three goals.[1]

Club career

Pamba

Masatu began his senior career with Pamba of Mwanza. He was playing for the club by 1988,[1] and was part of the Pamba side of the late 1980s and early 1990s alongside players including Hussein Amani Marsha.[2] Pamba's squad during this period won the 1990 Union championship, with Masatu later named among the notable members of the side.[3]

In 1991, Masatu and Marsha prepared to leave Pamba. The pair initially held negotiations with Young Africans, but the proposed move broke down and they instead signed for rivals Simba. Masatu recalled that Simba financier Azim Dewji offered the pair a larger signing payment and arranged for them to complete their transfers.[2]

Simba

Masatu joined Simba in 1991.[2] He established himself primarily as a central defender and became a prominent member of the club during the 1990s.[4]

He was part of the Simba team that reached the final of the 1993 CAF Cup. Simba drew the first leg 0–0 against Ivorian club Stella Club d'Adjamé in Abidjan before losing the return leg 2–0 in Dar es Salaam.[4] Masatu later recalled the final and the preparations for the second leg in interviews about his career.[4]

Masatu remained with Simba as the club won consecutive Tanzanian league championships in 1994 and 1995.[1] He also scored in Simba's 4–1 victory over Young Africans on 2 July 1994.[5]

Later career

National Football Teams records Masatu with Oman Club during the 1998–99 Omani season, before a return to Simba in 1999.[1] In the same year, Masatu was also included in a Tanzania Stars squad assembled for the African Cup Winners' Cup. A photograph of the squad before its tie against Simba FC of Uganda identifies Masatu among the Tanzania Stars players.[6]

Masatu played for Kajumulo World Soccer of Morogoro in 2000 and returned to Simba for the 2001 season.[1] Simba won the Tanzanian league championship that year.[1]

Masatu subsequently moved to Indonesia after leaving Simba to pursue an opportunity there, travelling through Kenya before flying to Indonesia.[7] Masatu stated that he spent seven years playing professionally for several Indonesian second-tier clubs.[7] National Football Teams records him with Persiraja Banda Aceh from 2002 to 2005.[1] Masatu later played for PSAP Sigli in the 2007 Divisi Satu season,[1] helping the club earn promotion to the Divisi Utama.[8]

International career

Masatu represented Tanzania from 1989 until 1997.[1] He has 22 senior international appearances and three goals.[1]

He scored his first recorded international goal in a 1–1 draw with Sudan during the 1991 CECAFA Cup.[9] He later scored during Tanzania's 1994 CECAFA campaign and equalised in the 89th minute of a 2–2 draw against Ethiopia at the 1995 CECAFA Cup.[1][10]

Masatu also appeared for Tanzania in qualification for the 1992 African Cup of Nations, 1996 African Cup of Nations and 1998 African Cup of Nations.[1] Although primarily a central defender, he was also used at right-back during his international career.[11]

Style of play

Masatu primarily played as a centre-back. Despite being relatively short for the position, he was noted for his reading of the game and positional awareness.[11] In later interviews, Masatu discussed the importance of communication, positioning and organising the defensive line when assessing younger Tanzanian central defenders.[12]
