Gemma Triay Pons (born 28 June 1992) is a Spanish professional padel player from the island of Menorca. She has been the world's top-ranked woman in four seasons and, as of July 2026, heads the International Padel Federation (FIP) ranking alongside her Argentine partner Delfina Brea.[1]
Triay finished as year-end number one on the World Padel Tour in 2020 with Lucía Sainz and in 2021 and 2022 with Alejandra Salazar.[2] The third of those made her the first woman to top the circuit in three consecutive seasons.[3] After the women's game moved to the Premier Padel circuit, she returned to the top of the ranking in 2025 with Brea and closed the season as number one for a fourth time.[4]
Early life
[edit]Triay grew up in Alaior, in the interior of Menorca, and began her sporting career at the town's tennis club.[5] Her official FIP profile lists her place of birth as Mahón, the island's capital.
An injury ended her tennis career, and she came to padel almost without looking for it, beginning to compete in 2013. She has said that the sport gave her a second chance to make a living from competition.[6]
Career
[edit]Lucía Sainz and Alejandra Salazar (2016–2023)
[edit]Triay formed a partnership with the Catalan player Lucía Sainz, who switched to the right-hand side of the court to accommodate her. In their first season together they won the Spanish national championship, beating the top-seeded twins María José and María Pilar Sánchez Alayeto in the final.[7] In November 2020 the pair reached the top of the World Padel Tour ranking for the first time.
For the 2021 season Triay began playing with Alejandra Salazar. The pair, nicknamed "Triazar", dominated the women's circuit for two and a half years, winning 23 titles together and setting a record of twelve titles in a single season.[8]
Marta Ortega and Claudia Fernández (2023–2024)
[edit]After Salazar underwent elbow surgery in June 2023, Triay began playing with Marta Ortega on a provisional basis. The following month the new pair won the BNL Italy Major in Rome, beating the world number ones Ariana Sánchez and Paula Josemaría 6–3, 3–6, 7–5. The tournament was the first women's event staged on the Premier Padel circuit, making Triay and Ortega its first female champions.[9] With Salazar close to returning, Triay decided in August 2023 to keep Ortega as her permanent partner, a break-up that attracted considerable comment within the sport.
For 2024 she paired up with the teenager Claudia Fernández. They won the Mexico Major in Acapulco in December, making Triay the first player to take a Major with two different partners, and closed the regular season with the Milano P1, their sixth title of the year.[10]
Delfina Brea (2025–present)
[edit]Triay began the 2025 season with the Argentine Delfina Brea. They won their first title together at the Cancún P2 in March and took nine titles over the year.[11]
In May 2025, after beating Sofía Araújo and Andrea Ustero in the semi-finals of the Asunción P2 in Paraguay, Triay reclaimed the world number one ranking for the first time since the creation of the Premier Padel circuit.[12] It was 771 days since Sánchez and Josemaría had taken the position from her at the World Padel Tour's Granada Open in October 2022.[13]
The pair retained the ranking into 2026. In July they won the Andalucía Málaga Premier Padel P1, beating Bea González and Josemaría 7–5, 3–6, 7–6 in a final lasting more than three hours; it was their fourth title of the season, after Gijón, Cancún and Rome.[14]
National team
[edit]Triay was a member of the Spanish squad at the 2016 World Padel Championship in Cascais, Portugal,[15] where the women's team retained its title for a second consecutive championship.[16]
At the 2021 championship in Doha she and Salazar beat Claudia Jensen and Silvana Campus 6–2, 6–0 as Spain won a seventh women's team title.[17] A year later in Dubai the same pairing delivered the decisive point of the final, beating Julieta Bidahorria and Virginia Riera 6–1, 6–2 for an eighth title.[18] In 2024, again in Doha, she opened the final alongside Claudia Fernández on the way to Spain's ninth women's world title and a sixth in a row.[19]
