Ellul
Ellul is a Maltese surname.
Originally Hellul, the name was first recorded in Calatatrasi, Sicily in 1178 (Allūn ibn Bādīs, Siculo-Arabic: علون بن باديس) as a personal name, then in Malta (Casali Dragu Gazara et Maritatu) in 1419 (Luca Hellul) as a surname. Another variant Hellun was recorded in Malta (Casali Chircop) in 1601, but has since become extinct. It is either derived from the Siculo-Arabic (Proto-Maltese) words: أيلول (aylūl), being a nickname for someone born in September, or هلال (Hilāl), meaning crescent moon, as shown on the coat of arms.
